i think strats are a little more versitile, and more universal in styles of music. you mostly see teles in the hands of country players, and oddly enough punk rock players (mainly due to the clash) as for tone knobs, thats between you and your ears. there is no right or wrong way to set them

Stratocasters are the best guitars ever made. Theyre good for everything. Blues, Rock, Soft. Telecasters are usually used for country stuff. plus, i hate the headstock on it. Ive heard that some Tele's are real heavy too. I just use Strats.

Strat is way more comfortable and has a trem bar for some sweet vibrato! The tele is like your wife and the strat is like that cute chick you saw at the mall last night!

+1, i think the strat is more versatile, but the tele is by no means a bad guitar

What's the difference?

Well, traditionally people can argue this until the cows come home. Teles have a really bright sound....strats can get more sounds. The necks are different on both guitars. There's no tremolo on a tele.

My advice? Play both and just find out what's good for you. (and, if you still can't decide...buy both!! Mwahahahah!!!)

yeah, I just love Jimmy Page's country sound on Led Zep 1 and Stairway to Heaven has got to be one of the best country ballads aver! :?

The tele is going to be simpler to figure out as far as tone goes. 3 pickup choices (neck, bridge or both) and just volume and tone. the strat will be more versatile because of the two tone controls and extra pickup choices. As far as the necks being different I disagree. I have and Am Deluxe tele and an Am Deluxe strat, both maple "C" necks and they're pretty much the same. The balance on the tele seems a little more awkward, the strat is better balanced and easier to play at least for me. Try 'em both and see what works best to start. You'll probably end up with both anyhow.

I have a Strat so I`m partial to that. But I think the design of the Tele makes it a little harder to reach the last few frets on the neck.

i have nothing agenst the tele's. in fact, the honey blondes are real pretty. but, if i had an extra pile of cash to blow, i'd rather have a second strat than my 1st tele. i just think the strat is more guitar :)

haha, remember, your wife used to be one of those cute chics to.

It's like you decided on buying a tele, then after seeing strats all the time you wish you had bought the strat. When that happens, you turn your tele into a strat, or at least try to, you add a bigsby, a middle pickup, a 5-way switch, add an extra tone pot, take some weight off by carving in your own comfort contours and stuff like that. You might even wanna try turning a brunette into a blonde, if that's your thing.

You've now killed two birds with one stone, your wife is nearly as cute as that chic you saw at the mall and you can have the best of both worlds and not risk getting into any trouble.

 ...Don't get me wrong, no offense, I didn't mean to say that your wife still isn't cute or anything like that............... :? ...you understand what I was trying to say......... :( ...ya know what, just forget I said anything.

Strato was good enough for Jimi Hendrix and SRV and for Me,but I understand Steve Vai, Joe Satriani etc. long fingered players

I believe it was Merl Haggard that said "There's no place to hide behind a Telecaster." In concept it is a reletively simple design. Without the wide tonal range of the Stratocaster's electronic design and the tremolo you are forced to really work on your chops on a Tele. On a Strat you can fill up a solo with trills switching between pups and heavy vibrato using the trem and come up with something interesting to fill the space but to make a Tele sound really good requires a more traditional approach to music.

I would go with a Strat...just so versatile, so comfortable to play, easy access to upper frets, contoured body, easy to modify...you can't go wrong. In many ways, the Strat was the result of complaints that players had with teles. Leo and the boys listened to these suggestions, and out came the Strat...although, as an admitted Strat-Head, I'm horribly biased :-) Seriously, though, go with a Strat! And if you want to save a few bucks and take the time to play a few, you can find a MIM Strat that's really close to the Americans...I can afford both versions, but due to the fact that I heavily modify my Strats and I can't find a big difference b/n the MIM and MIA's, I prefer the MIM.
