The MXR Distortion + was a very popular pedal.

Your best bet is to try out a bunch at your local music store.

If you want a Distortion that is high quality and can give you anything from a subtle overderive to a metal distortion then what you are looking for my friend is the CRUNCH BOX from MI Audio. Handwired and made in Austrailia. Here is a good place to get one at a very fair price and quick shipping. http://www.pedalspluseffectswarehouse.c ... -crnbx.htm
Located in a suburb of Youngstown Ohio as a matter of fact.

This is the last distortion pedal I will ever buy. I absolutely love it.

I have the DS-1... It's a classic... rather more subtle. I also own and like the DOD (now Digitech) Grunge for a real over the top distortion especially with my Marshall DSL 401.

My first stomp box was an MXR distortion pedal about 25 years ago. I used to use it like a RockMan, pluging my headphones into the output. They stopped making that particular pedal not too long after that. MXR was still producing effects but nothing like that first distortion pedal. Then I tried out the Boss DS-1. I figured for the price I couldn't go wrong. If I didn't like it I could always dump it in eBay. Fact is I love it! With the variations available for Tone, Level and Distortion you can set it for a smooth overdrive or, if playing through my Strat you get all kinds of harmonics bell like tones but it isn't harsh. I have the American Deluxe. The SCN pups sounds great through the DS-1.
