I'd rather buy an instrument that looks new and relic it the old fashion way. Play the crap out of it!

If someone came up to you and said that bought a new car and took a hammer and sandpaper to it to make it look like it had been used, you'd think that he was out of his bucket yet let the same guy say that he paid $100 extra for a relic'd guitar a lot of people would think it was cool.

I know guys who have built hot rods with the "aged" look and call them "Rat Rods". I reckon it's the same type of thing.

Just a different type of finish. Not my cup of tea, but to each his own. I don't see it as any of my business what people like or don't like. If a player likes a relic finish, great, if a player likes a brand new finish, great, if a player likes a new finish so he can beat the heck out of it and relic it through play wear, great, we're all making music and that's what it's all about anyway.

Rat Rods are usually based on vehicles that are already half a century old at least. Model A's haven't been made since 1931. Strats have been made since 1954 with relatively little change. How do you keep selling them? You come up with a new gimmic every few years, that's how. Relic'ing is just the latest in a long line of goofy ideas from the guitar makers. Remember the Gothic Gibsons? Voodoo Gibsons? Whether it's related to the appearance of the guitar, the names of the pickups, or if the hardware is "true to vintage", we always seem to fall for yet another line of B.S.

Don't forget the "Robo-Gibsons".

Rebel, are you talking about the relic jobs done on Fender Custom Shop guitars or relics done by others?

I guess all of them..I've seen some CS Fenders that looked pretty good but they only had minimal wear, the ones that are heavy relic'd just arent for me,I liked Rory Gallagher, but I wouldn't buy the CS version of his Strat....and I've seen others that had big chunks taken out of the finish.
If I was going to buy a CS Strat,I would have to go with a Closet Classic or NOS Strat....I just don't want to play a guitar that looks like I haven't taken care of it...because I do take care of mine.My old Les Paul Custom has some really nice wear on it and I played it that much to "relic" it.

Harley Davidson did this with their matte and textured paints. It looked like someone had painted it in their garage with a can of Krylon spray paint.

I'd rather turn my new guitar into my own "relic" by good honest wear that I put on it. Remember, you can buy the look, but you can't buy memories.

I was speaking more of the description "vintage", and how its replacing "relic" as the new selling buzzword. Everything with a scratch or dent was described as "relic", then tagged with a rediculous price, one that people would be too shamed into asking before the "relic" fad.
Now everything over 8/ years old is tagged as"vintage", and sold for too much. Now everything that may be a discontinued or a few versions behind whatever the current model is are called vintage. I see it more with pedals now, but the term is saturating everything. I saw a commercial for a clothing store, could have been Old Navy, or The Gap, and they were advertising "vintage T's". A t shirt!

How about an Ebay listing for a used Rory Gallahger Strat which describes the instrument as "in mint condition"?

HOW THE FOOK COULD YOU TELL?

Same for the recession-relic Roadworns.

I guess they're intended for generation "Y-bother" slackers who have no respect or reverence for a musical instrument -- they can just kick it around like a soccer ball and nobody will ever know the difference.
