well, what styles of music or artists do you want to play? strats are pretty versatile, so i'd imagine it would suit you fine, but the only real way is to go and try one.... like i've said in other threads, go and try as many guitars in your price range as you can... you may find something better than what you expected, but the new american standards are amazing and i doubt you coud go wrong with one of those

yeah, i'd play the new american standard... they felt great to me, but be sure it will be a guitar that you will play and enjoy playing.... the strat / les paul rig is amazing, especially through a good amp... thats my current rig and i feel its extremely well suited to play most styles of rock

Do not only focus on the new american stratocasters (which are pretty good instruments !), try also a Highway One Strat, a Mexican Standard Strat and, like citizenerased said: test as much instrumenst within the price range as you can.
Maybe you pick a Mexican Standard that fits your requirements and you save some money or you can invest the saved money in a nice little fender tube amp (blues junior...)

Jake... you are truly ahead of your time. The American that you describe is exactly the one I want too. Do it Jake, I don't think you'll ever regret it. You most likely will regret if you sell or trade it though!
