The frets on my new standard strat are a bit sharp on the edges. Is this common with a mexican stat and can they be filed down without scatching the neck?

I would imagine they could be filed if you were very careful to avoid not hitting the neck with the file. If your not too confident with it you could always take it into the shop. Its been a long time since I owned a MIM strat so I dont remember if mine had the same problem. But I have read threads in the Squire section about people having this same problem. Maybe if you browsed around there you might find a solution to the problem.

I wonder if Fenders' warranty would cover this? Manufacturers typically cover workmanship and materials to the original owner - that is if you bought new from an authorized dealer.

I'd check with the dealer you bought it from.

Thank you for substantiating my remarks in my February 8 2008 post titled "Compared MIM Strat to MIA Strat". The MIM just don.t have the quality control and attention to detail as most of the other top name imports. When you get a new guitar, especially a brand like Fender you should not have to go and have the frets dressed down. I am looking at getting a new getfiddle and compared the MIM Strat to the MIC Epi LP. The Epi LP at the same price, beat the MIM Fender hands down.

The fret edges on my Standard Strat are "edgier" than my other guitars. I definitely would not call them sharp, but I can see how they might be thought of as such. Mine are not "edgy" enough to cause any cuts or scrapes during any sort of normal play. They're fine.

I have both an Epi LP Standard and a MIM Strat. They are completely different guitars. The finish on my Strat is much better (no imperfections) than the LP, and of course the sound of the two are completely different. The LP is slightly easier to play.

I guess I would describe the frets as edgy rather than sharp. I am not sure at this point that it is enough of a problem to risk having the neck scratch ed by having them filed down. Interesting tho, the first MIM strat I tried had fresh blood on the next after the sale guy played it and handed to me. I guess that one had sharp frets and not edgy.

One reason fret ends get sharp is because the wood on the fretboard can shrink back slightly if it is in a dry or cold enviroment too long. This can happen during shipping especially. A good guitar shop would be able to dress your fret ends and get things smooth again.

sharp frets? this is the first time ive heard of this. This kind of sucks, since im about to buy a standard. but, you can always file them down. http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tools/Files.html .you can find anything for repairing a guitar at this site.

The fret beveling tool looks like it would do a nice job but rather pricey.

That happened to me on my new classical guitar last Fall. I was told that the change in environment caused this so I filed the fret edges down which wasn't easy.

I would put in into a humidified room for a few days, and if it has a rosewood neck I would make it's not dry by lightly applying some lemon oil to it. I use Dunlop's fret board conditioner. This helped my MIM Strat.
