SRV is the man that really got me into the blues.... although... the first blues album I bought was one of BB Kings.... I'm not too fond of BB's studio recordings..... although I LOVE his live recordings :P they are magical!

Some mentioned that BB plays with more soul than Stevie.....
I dissagree entirely. Both of these guitarist drip with soul when they are playing. Their music comes from within.....

I saw SRV many times......when watching him at times it seemed as though the music was coming out of him....not the guitar so to speak.

I have seen BB a few times as well. What he plays is what he feels. The music flows out of emotion not structure or scales..
They are both great.
But as a fan I choose SRV over any other guitar player. His music just does it for me.

But like it has been said many times before. BB can have more feeling in one note played than many guitarist can play in whole flurry of notes.

B.B. is the King without a doubt. Without B.B. there might not have been a Hendrix or Stevie. But in both cases the student had surpassed the master. Both have broken ground into new terratory. I would have to take my hat off to SRV for this vote because he took blues to a higher level.

I met SRV in Honolulu in 1983. This was shortly after David Bowie released him from the Let's Dance tour as lead guitarist to promote SRV's album Texas Flood which CBS picked up. SRV was still reletively unheard of yet. I only knew of him as another Hendrix disciple like Robin Trower. He walked into the record store I was working in at that time - Tower Records in Honolulu. A little mob gathered around him and he signed autographs for a while. The manager of the store had given me a promo copy of Texas Flood prior to that so I knew who SRV was. I thought the music was excellent... especially Lenny, but I had seen so many famous musicians walk our isles. At that time SRV hadn't yet achieved the status of the master bluesman he would soon to become known as. I basicly turned my back on the mob and attended to cleaning some record racks.

I'm sure you all know the feeling of having someone looking at you. Well, I turned around and SRV is standing all alone, a couple paces away from me and he was looking at me. There was this wierd silence between us... it was like he was waiting for me to say something. So I said the most intetilligent thing I could think of which was, "You're Stevie Ray Vaughan." He looked down at himself and then said, "Ah... yeah, you're right!" Then he just kept on looking at me, so again I said the first thing I could think of which was, "well... I guess anybody who digs Hendrix is cool by me." If you could have seen the smile on his face. He was happy and obviously relieved that he could take off his game face and that's what he did. He took four huge paces to cover the ground between us and put his hand out for me to shake it. When took his hand he held mine then started to Indian Wrestle with me where we stood. He let me win. We talked for a while like old friends. At one point he had his arms over my shoulder and mine were around his waist. We talked about his upcoming album, I had heard an advance cut of Voodoo Chile... A Slight Return, and we talked about Hendrix's phrasing and how he approached it. Everyone in the store was looking at us. After he left the manager walked up to me and said, "I didn't know you knew Stevie Ray Vaughan", to which I replied, "Yeah, we had the same guitar instructor".

I miss you Stevie...

i've had the pleasure of seeing both live, but its hard to compare. i saw stevie when he was probably in his 20's, and bb when he was probably in his 80's. obviously, srv was a little more entertaining. but i do hope that when i'm in my 80's, that i can still play like bb did that night. i'll probably be just sitting in a chair drooling on my guitar and waiting for my meds

I've seen both, and BB is a much more compelling artist. Maybe I caught Stevie on a bad day, but he seemed detached and just mailed it in. (The Gorge Amphitheater, George, Washington, about a year before he died). I also listen to BB more than I do SRV. Just a personal preference. Hey, some people like Beyonce!

SRV uses licks he learned from BB.

LOL...yeah, he just added about 100 more notes to'em and tripled the tempo, but their BB licks all the way.

Hmmm....

Let's see...different generations, different styles although they are in the same genre.

I think for the sake of this thread...I'm going to go with a happy medium and state that ALBERT KING is the winner of this thread. (contemporary of BB and a major influence on SRV...)

Ha!
