If not;

Take the pickguard off, this is going to utilize the 5 way blade, and a DP/DT switch

1) lets say youre going to use a toggle. It will be to the right of the 5 way, so looking at it with the pickguard off, its now to the left of it.

2)with the pickguard orientated this way, take either a piece of wire, or what i like to use is a lead i cut off a resistor, Use it as a jumper. Wire the bottom lug of the back of the DPDT switch to the lug right next to it.

3)Take the HOT wire from the bridge pickup, wire it to the second lead of the 5 way switch, on the right hand side (in relation to the way it looks to you now, with the pickguard off, and the back facing you)

4) take the ground from the Bridge pup, wire it to the middle lug of the DPDT switch, the side closest to the 5 way switch

5)take the HOT lead from the MIDDLE pickup, wire it to the middle lug of the DPDT, this will be the lug next to the one you wired the Ground from the Bridge to.

6)The lug of the DPDT switch, the one facing the 5way, the one below where you soldered the ground from the Bridge pickup, the last one on that side. This is going to be a ground. Solder a wire to it, and solder the other end to an earth/ground connection (back of a pot works fine)

7) (BTW),on this mod, you're only using one side of the connections from the 5 way switch, obviously this is the side we've been attaching wires to). This isnt a step as much as something to keep in mind, it makes it much easier to know where everything is going.]

8) Now, your going to jump a wire, from the 5 way switch, on the only side we're working on, its going to be the lug after the one we attached the hot lead from the bridge; jump a wire from this, over to the DPDT, and attach it to the lug below where we attached the hot wire from the middle pickup. it will be in the right bottom corner. (keeping in mind, right now the guitar is on its face, neck towards you, 5 way to the left of the DPDT)

9) The last lug on the DPDT is going to the ground/earth connection. Again, back of a pot is fine.

10) Lastly, solder the HOT wire from the neck pickup, to the last lug of the 5 way switch, on the same side as all the other connections we've just made. The other wire from the neck pickup is the ground; so ground it.

I dont have a diagram, but if you want me to draw one, let me know.

This mod will only work for the Middle/Bridge in series like you want. even if you throw the switch while the 5 way is in the neck/middle, it will still be in parallel.

I still think you dont need to do anything, if you have a push pull wired to the middle for a series connection, it should work. Like i said, if its wired correctly, you're not going to get any sound from the middle pickup when you hit the series switch, they arent designed that way, and you SHOULDNT hear anything if its wired correctly from the middle pickup.

You cant have only one pickup in series, they dont work that way, you need to have two pickups going, this turns them into a in series humbucker. So it should work when the 5 way is in the middle/bridge position, and you push or pull, or however the push/pull is setup to activiate the series wiring.

Have you tried this yet?

Im trying to figure out what we're working with here.

Okay,I just want to get everything straight. So when you put it on the middle/bridge position, and turn on the series button, or whatever you have, it doesnt go from parallel into series? Am I correct?

when I pull the switch parallel is all good, but takes too much fluffing around during songs to flick push/pull switch then flick 5 way to be able to get the parallel soundss

I just want standard strat combos in all switch positions

with one exception bridge/mid in series in place of bridge alone

tone controls can go aswell if there is a way to do with a normal 5 way switch

preferably a diagram with a normal switch (only because I have a spare ready to go.

but if a better solution is avail using a super switch, I dont mind if I have to buy one

Standard position 1 is bridge, is that what you mean? I am not really clear what you want. Do you want positions 1 through 4 as normal, and position 5 as the bridge and mid in series, or do you want position 1 as the bridge and mid in series with positions 2 through 5 as normal?

Also, if you want one of the tone controls on two pups, you will need a super-switch anyway, so this won't work with the 5-way switch. The super-switch will fit in place of the 5-way with no modification needed.

dont really want a super switch if it can be avoided

just want normal strat in all pos

with one exception instead of bridge alone, to be bridge and middle in series

(just want the punters wondering where the extra juice is coming from)

am happy to lose tone controls, and just have one master vol only

OK, even sacrificing tone control, I saw no way to get the switching options that you wanted with only the standard 5-way switch.

Using a super-switch, this is one way to get all that you wanted (picture below). This way the guitar will appear to be unmodified. Hopefully, others can look at the diagram and confirm if this will work as listed, or not. The wire colors don't necessarily have any meaning, just used for clarity.

Position 1: Bridge and mid in series
Position 2: Bridge and mid in parallel
Position 3: Mid
Position 4: Mid and neck in parallel
Position 5: Neck
Upper tone control for neck and mid, lower tone control for bridge

Hi Shimmilou,

I not too sure what's happening on that diagram. I think the upper tone control will work on all 5 positions?

Anyway there's a much tidier way to wire it. :wink:

what I really want is

pos1=neck
pos2=neck+mid parallel
pos3=mid
pos4=bridge+mid parallel
pos5=bridge+mid in series

preferably 1tone for neck +mid and 1 tone for bridge

I want to be rid of the push/pull switch and have the guitar to look stock

thanks geetarzandan

Howdy!

As previously mentioned you'll need a 5 way Super Switch. The diagram below should give you all the positions you have requested, wired as ergonomically as possible.

The Upper Tone works on Position 1,2 & 3. The Lower Tone works on Position 4 & 5. I've placed the tone controls on one pole of the 5 way to make it easy for you to change should you wish.

Please note: I have not tested this myself.

Hope this helps. :D

Good catch Andybighair, master tone all right. Your diagram is much better.

Ok, there you go. It just seems like a lot of work, if i wanted to be able to switch to some alternate wiring, and didnt want a mini toggle, or push/pull, I'd just buy a S1 switch. Just have to hit it with your pinky, and if you want to rewire later, its not as complicated. I hate working on super switches, but the ones that really bug the hell out of me, and alot of other guys, is Gibson's Varitone.
