Neither are better. You really need to own both, They are different guitars with different sounds.

+1.... you can cover an extreme amount of genres with just those two guitars and the right amp

That's my hope.

I'm, er....contemplating a Les Paul Studio right now to offset my 2 strats (ducks rotten vegetables)

les pauls are great guitars.... there are plenty of nice ones besides fender :o but if you plan on looking into a lower end gibson, be sure to also play the epiphone elitist series.... they are, in many ways, better than their lower end gibson counterparts... i have an elitist les paul and it plays so much better than the les paul studios

Oh, I do plan to shop around...but, since I am a leftie, I'm not going to have as many choices (and, I'm still leery about buying online....)

What I need the Les for more than anything is just that stuff that Les Pauls are well-known for. But I agree that Epiphone is a great brand...and a lot of the stuff they put out rivals their parent company.

(Yes...I bought this month's Guitar World and drooled over the new Epiphone Les Paul Ultra II. That guitar is SWEET!) :P

*goes to epiphone ultra II site....*

*drools*

*returns here wanting one*

wow, that looks like a nice guitar, especially since you get so many features that you don't from gibson all for much less.... may have to play one sometime soon, although i have a perfectly good les paul

I like them both, but which Les Paul?
Which Strat?
Gibson has made many variations of Les Pauls with varying degrees of quality.
Fender has made many variations of Strats with varying degrees of quality.

I picked Les Paul, because I have one, and I prefer humbuckers.
My Fender is a Mustang--which I love as well.

I've had both guitars. I really like the wider nut width and flatter neck of the Les Paul. I had a black '74 Les Paul Classic. What I didn't like about the Les Paul was it's weight. That guitar was very heavy beast to me. Also I'm not as much of a humbucker fan as I am a lover of of the crisp tones of the single coil pups. My main musical outlet is the blues so the real choice for me was to decide whether to go semi-hollow or solid body. I was torn between the ES-335 and the Strat. In the end it was the SCN pups, S-1 switching, Fender/Schaller locking tuning pegs and a high precision bridge/tremolo that's available in the Deluxe series that swayed my decision to go with a solid body Stratocaster. Plus the Fender feels almost weightless compared to my old Les Paul.

Okay, it's official. Strats are better than Les Pauls by a 17 to 6 vote.

I'm glad that's out of the way, now.

Ask that question on a Gibson or Epiphone forum and the results will be the oppsite.

I agree they are different guitars and what further complicates the issue is the fact that there are many different Strats and many different LPs.
Having said that I voted for the LP because a basic LP is better suited for the kind of music I play (American Alternative, British Indie, Rock in Spanish) than a basic Strat.
However, my VG Strat is better than my Standard LP or my Robot. Also, I consider it better than the Epiphone Ultra II's I've tried even though they are different guitars. The Epi is a hybrid and the VG is a modeling guitar with acoustic and multiple tuning options.
