I has a gig yesterday where the other guitarist in my band broke his string. One thing led to another and he ended up using my beloved strat while i was handed a borrowed epiphone les paul. I found it far too "chunky" and could not pull off an important solo on it. Subsequently the gig was a shambles. Anyone had a similar experience?

Let me get this straight...

HE broke a string, so he borrowed YOUR guitar so you could borrow someone ELSE'S guitar....

Why didn't he just borrow the Epiphone?

I could never be talked into borrowing a guitar that I wasn't comfortable with mid-gig. I only have one nice strat, and when I play in public I bring my Squier as a backup. Even if it's a Squier, I'm still comfortable playing it because I learned to play on it.

This goes back several years.
It was our first gig together. not our first gig but first time together.
i got us the gig because my buddy and ex room mate owned a bar.
We both had ton's of friends come out for our show.

Well the other guitar player shows up and is acting very suspicious.
He would hang out with us, just acting weird.
We sound check and he says he blew a speaker.. So i live close enough i go and get my back up amp. We are running alittle late now but we'er cool right..

Wrong
On the first song on the firs set, the other guitar player has a lead.
when it comes up i hear this awful sound coming from his side of the stage.
i look over and he is sitting cross leg on the stage with his head down.
and he is Drunk as a skunk...

Needles to say i and the rest of the band was furious..
he was lucky to leave with out getting his but kicked.
We muttled thrught the rest of the night. but it was very embarassing.
for the rest of the band and the people how came out to see us.

Hey Paul don't ever come back.

anyway that's my worst

This is one of the beauties of being a lefty.
No one borrows your stuff, and it's not your responsibility.

first off dont let him borrow your strat and then second off wouldnt you rather stop the show and fix a string for 5 minutes than to have to whole thing go into shambles

we had no spare strings and also he jus could not tune the les paul, i think it had brand new strings, not totally stretched.

I HAVE TWO WORST GIG SCENARIOS
here's one

its about 1 year ago..

i have a band at school and one day there's some kind of reunion, but its not a school reunion. thousands of people around my province came..

we were goin 2 play on the main stage, but before us, another band playd first..
then we went up the stage, set everything right, and there goes the song..
after a few seconds, one of the guitars broke, its not the guitar though i think, mayb the amp..and weird noises came out.
and after a few minutes. the microphone broke, so my vocalist had to switch..it was crazy.
and the crowd started to boo us...haha

but it was a fun experience though.so it's okay for me NOW..haha

I can understand about the sound going down hill. I play both Gibson Les Paul and a couple of Strats (alternate tuning), at our gigs. With two guitar players, I find myself going more and more to the Strats because the Les Paul is just too heavy low-ended and not bright toned enough to rise above the mush of that humbucker sound, like a Strat can. Never give up your Strat, espeicially if when you are playing lead.

friend's band was playing for a small group. we just got there after a 19 hour drive. i was toast. we stopped there to say hi before going to the hotel. did i mention i was toast? so what do they do? insist i get up on stage. no equipment, no rehearsal, no knowledge of the fact that guitars even existed since my brain was fried, did i mention i was toast? just a reverse heastock jackson, a solid state peavey half stack, no effects. that's ok, just had to do rhythm. all covers, judas priest, led zeppelin, and a couple others... no clue how to really play the songs, just knew how they went. didn't do TOO bad, but still...

Playing an outside gig at river sandbar ,,on top a hay trailer for a stage.
About halfway thru the first set some guy comes up wanting to hear some country music.. told him we had some lined up in the next set just hold on for a few minutes...two songs later he hooks his pickup truck to the trailer
pulls out a 12 gauge automatic and says he's gonna shoot us if we don't play him a country song..
needless to say we played several ,, then gathered up our stuff and skipped ,,, that was about 12 years ago,, haven't been back to that sandbar to this day.

Farmington, MN, summer of '85. Outdoor gig playing for a biker rally on a private farm, opening up for a then-popular local Punk/Wave group called Urban Guerillas. We play a bunch of top 40 crap with a good smattering of oldies and a few originals that we became known for, and the bikers are good to us. Get asked to play some country and we do our best to oblige. The Guerillas show up - late - with no equipment because our sound-man said it would be okay to use ours (he assumed they meant PA) so they get up and start beating on our stuff playing their crap tunes. Bikers hate them and start booing, so their lead singer stops midway through a song and says "Don't tell us how to make music and we won't tell you how to ride those f***ing motorcycles." A half dozen of the biggest bikers ever seen get up and start moving toward the stage. Bass player and I run around back of the stage in hopes of dumping our equipment off the stage before it gets trashed. Lead singer jerk realizes his mistake and the band whips into a punkish rendition of Free Bird. Big bikers sit back down. They complete half a set and leave. (They get paid for the gig, we get free beer and eats.) We finish the night.
Load out at 1:00 AM and we're heading for the studio to put stuff away. Wife and I in the lead car get to the end of the half mile long driveway and a state trooper waves us through but stops everybody behind me. Behind him one either side of the road is every Sheriff's deputy vehicle in Dakota county and most of the Minnesota highway patrol. Party gets busted. Wife and I hit the studio around 1:30 AM, the band and the rest of the gear shows up around 4:00 AM.
