I understand what you mean with the wife! That's why I don't own an airbrake myself. Maybe someday!?

Had very similar problems recording, i tried removing valves it made little to no difference on the close mike but did improve the distant mikes. As far as i could find out its down to 100watters being made to reach the back of the venue. perceivable volume difference between 50 and 100watts in a practice room are negligable the decibel's dont drop that much compared to how they would 30ft away, and a greater difference 80ft away. Dont suppose you know anyone who could fit a VPR to my 800s. That airbrake looks totaly awesome but i just cant justify it to the missus after what ive spent on gear this last 2 months. She just says turn it down some more if you want it quieter. The whole notion of driving a output stage is like quantum physics to her.

Joking aside, have you had a look at a couple of the smaller Cornfords?

I think the trend for small valve/tube amps in the last few years is one of the really good things going at the moment, and for some strange reason it is a trick Marshall seem to be missing. If you like that general kind of sound then it's one worth demo-ing.

Maybe you'll like it and maybe you won't. But I get a sense you are well ahead of me in knowledge about valves, speakers and such: I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts.

I don't have one - yet. But it's on my mind...

Cheers - C

I'm a big fan of the Blues Junior. It's not for metal heads or for a lot of effects, but for awesome blues tone it's tremendous. Recently, I've realized how much I need a Gdec. The built in rhythm section lets you get in the groove, and the different settings are pretty versatile. The tone is not going to match a Blues Junior though.

I dont have enough kidneys to sell mate. I think in that price range the matchless dc30 is the undefeated champ. Theres a whole plethoria of amp manufacturers to choose from too victoria, carr and of course dr z. Do i really need to shell out that kind of money on a amp? i dont think so. The facts are
1 marshall are one of the world leaders in amp design how many classic tones were recorded with marshall amps
2 their ultra reliable
3 Im never going to perform alongside eric clapton or pete green and its pretty likely im never gonna get a no1 hit.
4 Although high end amps sound like an angels choir are they suited to being thrown in the back of a van and sat on for 100 miles down the m1.

Truth is boutique amps are superb, their just not suited to my kind of usage. I really think ive got to offload the 800 head and get myself a blues jr. Small, practical, and capable of some very classy sounds.

I've been through the boutique market, vintage market, & lots of in between.

What I've kept the longest & never sold are as follows :
Matchless DC-30
Fuchs ODS-50
Fender Twin 65 RI
Naylor Superdrive

You can see my gear & my notes on each one at www.soultostrings.com/gear.asp

I use a strat most always. The Fuchs while expensive, is the best of both worlds clean & overdrive. Hope this helps,

Sure, sure. But I was just wondering if you'd tried one and what you thought of it. I wonder if you feel it really is a reasonably Marshall-type sound at low wattage levels, or no. That seems to be the general line, but a gentleman who expresses reservations about Mesas is someone with interesting and sensitive ears, whose opinions count!

Bound to say, the couple of Cornfords I looked at in a shop seemed pretty sturdy and road-worthy to the eye, and if we are calling them "boutique", well then it is the bottom end of the boutique field.

No arguments on the Blues Junior, though. Pretty damn near perfect amp of its kind, I'd have thought.

Cheers - C

PS: typing edit (spilling, Ceri, spilling).

what im really considering is this

http://www.torresamps.com/build_your_own_amp.htm

I could learn alot through something like that, and the possibilities are endless.

Yeah, that's why I said you were way ahead of me regarding the innards of amps! That scares the willies out of me, though I've heard great things about them - best of luck!

I'll do anything you like to a guitar, but I'll pay any money for someone else to crawl inside my amps for me. A bridge too far...

Im not a amp guru. I even set the bias on my amp by ear. Its about time i started learning about this stuff, and think theres no better way to start than by building my own. From a kit with a decent set of instructions. I cant really go wrong, the capacitors are going to be empty too so no real danger of shock initialy.
My ideal amp would be tweed on the clean, plexi on crunch and soldano slo on the drive. The only way im ever going to get that in 1 amp would be to build it. It would weigh a tonne though.
Soultostrings
Im a jcm800 fanatic mate I've got 2 a 2203(single chanel) and a 4211(chanel switcher) Their not the best sounding marshall, but both do clean and driven quite well. something i've found you need to be carefull of with marshalls. Its a happy compromise.

Nikininja,
I LOVE Marshall JCM amps, they are fantastic. They have a unique sound with telecasters too I've discoverd but great w/ everything of course.

You are right, my sister actually had one that I played all the time. They SING don't they? I loved how they clean up. I am always shocked when people say Marshalls don't have clean tone. When the right player is at the helm they can be very gorgeous.

I wish I still had one. I did however record 2 songs with one, let me know if you wanna check them out.

I think I added you to myspace last night, looked like you haven't logged in for a while tho :) Talk soon,

STS

Long ago, 'was told the definition of a beautiful woman is one who walks into a room...

...and you remember her for the rest of your life.

So extrapolating, the perfect amp would be one which you plug your Strat into...

...and you remember it for the rest of your life.

I agree JSJH, it's the amp you remember.

i remember that first time plugging into a Matchless DC-30. My whole world changed.

It's like , my whole thought on tone was backwards. I went from "give me more gain, & sustain, & fast licks" to "Wow, let's see how much space between notes to make this lick slick."

Interesting topic. Keep it alive folks!
