I have a bit of a 'thing' about Clapton Strats and have owned several, and still have a few. One of the ones I kept is an '89 Blackie. It's a great guitar. This neck - common with a '89 neck I obtained on eBay on it's own - has a different feel from the other (later) necks I have - the 'V' is more pronounced, which I like. I would also comment that the earlier pickup / boost circuits seem to have a bit more 'bite' to them. I'm not sure which element is responsible for this, but it may be the pickups... Lace changed the design somewhat in the early 90s. I don't like the fact that the pickups tend to yellow somewhat, but otherwise, I think this is the era to aim for. Some claim that these earlier Clapton Strats are the only ones to go for and use this as a means to ask premium prices... I'm not sure I'd go that far, but I like the one I have.

Hope this helps...
