I believe the tuners are a direct fit...no drilling. As far as the string trees, that's an excellent question! I don't know if the posts on the locking tuners are height compensated or not?

Guess I'll find out soon enough...I've got a set of said tuners en route and a HWY1 neck on the way also which has two string trees... I'll let you know once they arrive.

If your Strat came stock with those horrible Ping tuners....then yes....it will be a direct drop in replacement.
I have 8 Highway One's and replaced ALL the Pings with Fender/Schallers and the stock string trees fit into the program perfectly WITHOUT having to relocate them!

I don't know for sure, but it seems to me that using the string trees are kind of like eating chicken soup for a cold, as my grandmother used to say, "It couldn't hurt".

On my strat, i have the Sprezel locking tuners, and they're staggered, i believe the Shaller are too, I had them at one time, but it was a while ago. Anyways, i needed a string tree for the high E, but not the B, or any other string. I took off the tree, removed the side where the B string goes, and used just the E. If you want to sand down the headstock, you'll be able to use no trees. Dramatic? yes, worthwhile? maybe.
