Don't worry about the tone capacitor.
What you need is a flux capacitor.
Just need to harness the required 1.21 Gigawatts via your nearest USB connector and then listen to that baby hum!

Well now, that was a real helpful 1st post, give us some more wonderful info there hoss.

I read some more on this and there seems to be a divide. Some say it makes a difference in tone with different caps at the same values. Some say the voltage is to low for the cap to influence the tone in different ways. Anyone up for an experiment? I have always wanted to.

Here is what I'm thinking. A cheap stomp box setup with a dial and a pot. The person can dial in different caps of the same value and try to hear the difference at different tone amounts (10,5,0). After that I could put different values in it for testing pickups with different cap values.

I need recommendations for what caps will perhaps have the most distinguishing sound from one another. And we need to decide on a value that may show the most difference.

1. Orange Drops
2.?
3.?
4.?
5.?
Lets try to avoid any expensive caps if we can.

Those who say this should be ignored, as they apparently are simply talking out their $@!. Voltage has nothing to do with frequency response of a capacitor. Maybe they think that the caps are in guitars just to fool people?

Sounds like a good idea to experiment with different caps, but to really hear the direct sound differences, they should be installed in the circuit in the guitar, as adding a pot outside the guitar will change the tone in an even different manner, just from the added pot. Maybe remove and hang the existing tone pot outside the pick guard, still wired up for easy access to the cap for faster changes, without having to disassemble the guitar each time.

Orange drop, ceramic disc, paper in oil, mica, are all available at many electronics stores. Just get one of each in the same values, and maybe another of each at a second value and have at it. :)

THOMAS, you have a good amp you can check for a better cap now.......

Deluxe Matt, Shimmilou is right about caps

I do myself a test with many caps, value and materal and there are some small difference when material is not the same and big difference in value.

Guitar Player magazine have writeexcellent paper on "Tone Capacitor for Stratocaster" Part 1 on April 2010 an Part 2 may 2010.

Maybe you can find it on the web ?

I use Orange Drops (0.022 ufd) in all my guitars primarily because they are relatively inexpensive and easy to find. Beyond that, I don't feel it makes much of a difference in sound.

:? Why would you change the ceramic discs that come stock in the guitar to a different type if there is no difference in sound? The ceramic discs rarely, if ever, fail. Surely none of the guitars that you changed the caps in, had bad caps. :?:

Hehehe!

How would he know if he hadn't swapped them out? Nothing wrong with a bit of experimentation. Besides, the Orange drop caps look cooler!

Looks like you split the difference, a .033 uF..... out of the ordinary, but cool. :)

Yes, much cooler looking. So, it is only style, right?

Fender doesn't always use ceramic discs.

My 09 MIM Standard Strat came with a polyester cap. Even my AVRI 52 Telecaster came with a polyester cap for the modern wiring upgrade (ceramic disc caps were part of the original 52 wiring scheme that the guitar is delivered with). Even my Squire Affinity Tele and Ibanez came with polyester caps. Since I rewire all of my guitars anyway (new pickups, CRL vice Oak-Grigsby switches, mil-spec phone jacks, etc.) changing caps is just part of the job.

OK, that makes sense. I thought that you simply swapped capacitors. 8)
