I don't use the tremelo on my MIM strat, so I want to block it so it doesn't move.Having read a few threads on the subject, I understand (I think) the blocking part- fashion a piece of wood and wedge it between the tremelo and the guitar body. I am also putting on five springs.

The part I'm a little hazy on in these threads, is they often say to flush mount the tremelo. Isn't it already flush mounted?

Is this what is meant by flush?

It can't be this... right?

Flush means that the bridge is flat against the body.

Yes, the first picture shows flush mounting, although for the setup that you want, the screws should be tightened a little more until they just touch the plate, but not so tight that they lift the back edge of the plate. IMO, the "block" isn't necessary if you use five springs with the claw screws tightened down to hold the plate firm to the body. I just tighten the claw screws for mine, I've never used a block and the bridge stays put just fine.

Thanks shimmilou! I will try your setup.

Cool, let us know what you think after trying. It is my understanding from people who use a block, that you will get a different string vibration transfer to the body as compared to springs only, affecting the sound in a different way. I feel that using only springs and no block, gives a little more reverb sound from the strings, although either way, blocked or not, the differences will be subtle to very noticeable. I believe that Clapton preferred the sound with the claw screws tight with no block, over a hard tail bridge.
