Hey fellow Fender forumites,

This is probably a dumb question, but is there any benefit to putting locking tuners on a Strat if you dont use the tremolo? I like the trem decked and would prefer hardtail strats if I could get them.

The tuning stability of the standard Ping tuners is very good. Ive had guitars stay in tune for months.

One benefit would be quicker/easier string changes. But, as you stated, if your guitar stays in tune well already, and you don't use the whammy, not much benefit in that respect.

I have locking tuners on all of my guitars except my AVRI 52 Tele. Love 'em.

Yes, it's not only whammy use but string bending with which locking tuners potentially help maintain pitch stability. And some people claim the extra mass of metal on the bulkier ones (Sperzels and Schallers) aids their tone and sustain to some tiny extent.

Mind you, I have an array of locking, ordinary and vintage tuners on various Strats and it matters to me not an atom which one I'm using. Ease of restringing is the most significant advantage of lockers in my experience - and that's hardly a deal maker.

Cheers - C

Thanks for the responses!

I make good use of my Highway Ones' jumbo frets and love to do huge multi-string bends. None of them have tuning problems so I guess Ill stick to the standard tuners.

I really love my "Vintage Locking Gotoh" tuners on my classic player 50s strat. I bend all the time, and frequently use the whammy for a mild, shimmering effect, as opposed to deep dives. My strings stay in tune for the long haul. When I was out at college, I'd come home and pick up the strat for the first time in months and it would be in tune enough to be workable. Obviously thats not a desirable situation in which to start playing the guitar, but it just goes to show how well the tuners hold up.
