Since getting my Strat I've started paying more attention to what the folks on TV are playing and I've recently seen some big names like Nora Jones and Brad Paisley playing Telecasters (a paisley one in Brad's case).

Is this a nostalgia thing or is a Tele sound better than a Strat sound for some types of music?

they each have their own sounds for different things, in brad's case it's for country. However those aren't fenders, if you look closely they're "Crook" custom guitars

Hey phil- funny story- when I thought I would finally buy my first Fender- I always thought it would be a Tele - I mean I knew it was gonna be butterscoth blonde, black pickguard and maple fingerboard- wound up getting a 70's reissue Strat ,natural finish, at least I DID get one with a maple fingerboard
Both guitars are great- my advice is do what I'm gonna do-save up for a Tele and have the best of both worlds!

Hi,
They both are awesome guitars and IMO , you can't go wrong with one of each (IF you can afford it). I currently have an American Standard and a newly purchased American Standard Strat (olympic white w/ maple fret board). I had a highway 1 tele and mim standard tele, I'm not talented enough to play more than one tele at a time so I thought thinning the herd for a top of the line strat would be the way to go, I guess the best of both worlds, I'm traditionally a tele player, but the American Standard Strat is a high quality guitar that won't disappoint. not sure if this helps. good luck. 8)

Ah, that's why Nora's "tele" looked a little different in the knob department. Brad's looked pretty normal there to my inexperienced eye so I thought it might be a Custom Shop paisley job.

BTW, I just happened to catch a Brad Paisley performance a few years ago when he was just becoming "known". It was at a FLW fishing tournament event in a Wal*Mart parking lot, no less. We had stopped for groceries and the checkout girl asked if we were there for the big concert, so we hung around an hour or so to see what she was talking about. I believe he was playing an acoustic for that free show and I was impressed that he stayed on the mobile stage playing and singing several numbers by himself while his band took a 20 minute break mid show, and that he sounded just as good as a single stand up singer. He showed a lot of personality then, as he still seems to now.

The Tele has always been a country staple...but yeah, the other posters are correct in stating that Paisley is playing a custom.

But what I've also noticed about the teles is that they're gaining ground in rock. John Fruscante (Red Hot Chili Peppers) probably played a tele at least a third of the time during their last tour...and I've noticed that guitarists like John5 (White Zombie, Marylin Manson) is playing a telecaster (granted, one with double humbuckers.)

Then there's artists like Prince who's played a tele for a long time.

I always thought the key to a tele was that single coil in the bridge...it always had a really, really bright tone to it and pumped out a lot of volume. I guess the biggest thing that kept me away from a tele was the fact that I wasn't certain if it was the best choice for hard rock (and the strat was an instrument that could more easily be adapted to all kinds of musical scenarios.)

I also have a belief that right now, telecasters are sort of in a "fad" position right now where a lot of people who would normally buy something else are buying telecasters.

Eh....I don't know. I think at this point I'm happy with my 2 strats and if I buy another electric....I'm going to go for something with a chunkier sound.

But for what they're good at, it's hard to beat a telecaster.

Both guitars have reached iconic status. I don't think that anyone would argue that the strat is much more ergonomic and comfortable.

Teles have been popular since the 1950's. Thats way too long to be a fad or a case of nostalgia.
