It goes in the tremolo hole.

That spring is a spacer for the whammy bar, I keep that hole covered when not in use so I don`t loose the spring.

It is supposed to keep the whammy bar in the position you set it but still be moveable. Some folks say be careful not to screw the bar all the way in to where it compresses the spring solid or you could strip the bar or trem block threads.

I've seen pics of Custom Shop models with a little round sticky dot over the hole to keep the spring in. Maybe a smiley face sticker? Or a short screw of the same thread size might be better - no sticky residue.

I just got the new American Standard Strat, there was a little silver sticker over the hole to keep the spring in. I replace it over the hole when I unscrew the whammy bar.
joefaity..maybe you turned the guitar upside down and the spring fell out without you realizing it. I believe you can buy them from your local dealer, check it out.
