A Fender Statocaster 'California series' just came up for sale locally for $550. Comes with Fender hard case. Good condition.

My Fender book has them coming out in 97 or so. I thought I knew my Strats but this is a line that was perhaps only sold in the USA because I don't recall ever seeing them in Canadian stores

Curious...does anyone have one or ever played one to have an opinion? Does anyone know what these sold for originally?

thanks

I have seen alot of these I think they were 1997-99 They were a effort between Fenders US and Mexico plants and I think they were about $799.00 MSR but I see them on Ebay alot and they never seem to bring any good dollar amount. My self I would not pay over $450 for one unless it was killer player.

Thanks for some input on the original price and some estimate on current value. I now have some perspective.

I'd want this more for an addition to my collection than as a playing guitar (although that is also important). I'll watch this sale and if the seller drops the price I'll make an offer of $425 or so.

I have a black one for sale, but 600 is the lowest I would go. 1997. All original, except for the Fender Pearloid pickguard I swapped on it.

Plays great and sounds terrific.

What area are you in?

One of the cool things about them is that they came with matte neck finishes for easy movement, at least mnine did. It is shiny, but not glossy. I guess matte would be the term.

Also, there is a hole on the headstock for easy access to the trod for easy adjustment. No need to pop the neck off. Not a bullet, but a hole with dark brown trim. Looks nice that way.

robinstrat,

That looks the same colour one for sale. What colour would you call that? The one for sale is an HSS....but it seems to match the specifics of the Fender description. Can't see the writing on headstock in this photo but clear in another

Blonde - - and I agree, very nice bang-for-the buck guitars if you can find them.

I had a 3 color sunburst one. They have the Tex-Mex pickups in them. I had the guitar for 10 years. I loved it. But unfortunate for me, it was stolen last year. I could get a real good SRV sound out of it. I even got complements about the paint job on it. I was looking to get another one until an American Deluxe caught my eye. Yes they were $799. new. Mine had been sitting in a music store for a while before I came along. The store had mine and 2 other California Series Strats on sale for half price ($425). I traded in my 1987 or 88 (don't remember) Ibanez RG550 Desert Sun Yellow with HSC. They gave me $175 for it. That left me $250 to pay out of pocket. I was another satisfied customer. But I wish I still had that old Ibanez. Just for kicks.

I have one and like it alot. I am not a Strato-snob, but it is just as great as every other strat I have played. It has a matte finish on the neck for ease of movement, and the craftsmanship is great. The black finish looks better than the black finish on my American Vintage Pbass.

Vintage white...a bit like me.

My wife always wants me to get a Strat if it's a colour we don't have.

The California Series were American parts painted in Mexico and assembled in Corona. They were available in black, brown sunburst, candy apple red, fiesta red, and vintage white. They seemed to command a premium on Ebay few years ago but pricewise they stay around $500 to 600 US. Never played one so I can give no opinion there.
