Well the first question to ask is, what is your price range?

Pick the strat at the top of your budget range - with Fender production guitars, you get what you pay for.

You need to get into a store and get your hands on some. There are too many factors in picking one that I dont think we could say,"go get this one". I might love, but you might hate it. Neck size and shape is a big issue for me. For example, I dont feel comfortable with the "Modern C Necks". So any guitar with that neck is out for me.

But if you would like some guidance, perhaps post a basic idea of what your looking for, i.e. what kind of music do you want to be playing? Is their a finish type or color that you like better? do you want a humbucker in it? Price range?(The custom shop models are nice... lol)

With some more info we might be able to compile a list of Strats that meet your needs, then its up to you to get your hands on them and listen to the difference between them. Then it should be much easier to make to make the choice.

I agree that you just have to go and play as many as possible in your price range.

It seems that buying a Strat is like buying accounting software - Find the one that comes closest to what you want and how you play and then make modifications. It seems that most players on this forum swap out pups after their purchase so you might want to factor that into your pricing decision. Even if you go for an American Deluxe and fork over $1,000 - 1,200 you may end up wanting to add up to $300 in replacement pups. It can get salty. So if your budget it $800 you're probably looking at a MIM. But you're only going to know after you've wrapped your hand around the neck and attacked the strings.

Also suggest that you play the axe through either your own amp or one just like it in the store. Different amps bring out different tones. I've wheeled my old Ampeg VT22 into the store because there's nothing that sounds like it on the market today.

Yeah, I like the original American Strat, but my price range is somewhere around 400$. Any ideas?

What would I do with a $400 dollar budget?

Personally....I'd get a Squire, slap some better pickups in it and have a luthier fine tune the neck.

Laugh if you want, but tone wise I'd put that guitar up against some of the higher end models.....

(I'd also check out EBay....if it's in good condition, there's nothing wrong with going used.)

There are always three things you can get when you buy something - anything: Price, Quality, and Time. It's rare that you can get all three, you'll usually only get two of the three. If you want a quality axe and you want it now, you'll probably have to sacrifice price. If you just want an axe and you want it now you can get a low price. If you want a quality axe AND a good price ($400 for and American Strat) you'll more than likely have to sacrifice time. This is a long way of saying keep looking and you'll find what you're looking for - unless you're lucky and stumble across a great deal.

After two days of looking for an inexpensive axe I could travel with and not worry about, I stumbled across an American Deluxe for $425.

Sometimes even a blind pig can find an acorn.

Happy hunting.

If you are not a blind pig, then look for a Mexican-made one.

Let us know what you end up with.
