Hi All!
I play on American Deluxe Strat with .009 -.042 strings set.
That strings gauge is required by manual and was installed on guitar when I bought it.

However I want to change current 009/042 set on the heavier one - 010/046
(which will definitely cause incremental tension the neck)

Is it safe for the instrument?

Yes. Many people make the switch. I did. Some go to even larger gauge strings. You probably won't even see a difference in the setup. If you do it will be very minor.

May lift the bridge off more, you may have to screw the claw a little more or add spring.

You will have more tension on the bridge/trem. I had to add a spring to compensate when going from 9 to 10s on 2 different strats. (w/GHS EJ Nickel Rockers)

You MAY be able to get away wth just tightening the claw screws. You may be able to add enough extra spring tension by just angling the (3?) springs currently in there, but see if you can get an extra spring (I use 4 total) so you'll be ready just in case.

Yea, if at all possible, add springs rather than screwing the claw.

I use an .010 gauge string all the time, so the first thing I did after I bought my Strat was take the factory .09 set off and replace them with the .010s. The swap made very little difference in the guitar's setup. Neck relief was spot-on, as was intonation and action height. All I had to do was tighten the claw screws a little, to pull the bridge down to the proper gap and everything was fine from then on. There's not a lot of diffference in .09 and .010. It's only 1/1000th of an inch, so it won't affect the setup greatly.

Eldred commented on this question once, back in the dawn of man, that the "10's" were standard equipment on the 'vintage' gear because that's they were originally supplied. The ''9's" became stock on the 'later' models apparently because the were easier to play. I would also offer the thought that the vintage trem mass blocks were heavier than the later guitars, and could handle heavier strings. On a personal note, I have an American Deluxe VG on which I installed the Gilmour Hybrid set, and it plays real well.
