From my own experience over the years, I've come to believe that the type of wood used in and electric guitar -- and especially its density -- has far more to do with sustain than it does with tone. I'm talking about natural sustain here, mind you, not the sustain you get from overdriving your amp or using a pedal. From what I've seen the type of wood used does have some inflluence on that, but I can see very little difference in the tone. That's mostly the pickups/amplifier.

well since my thread got hijacked......

i was simply stating the FACT that putting too much paint on a guitar WILL affect the tone. its not a matter of "oh i cant hear it. i dont believe you." just because someone cant tell the difference doesnt make it any less true.... simply put.

rumblebox,

In case you didn't see it, this thread has some very good scientific data, and simple tests that we all can do, that supports the claims that the body and other parts, besides pickups and strings, can and do have an affect on the tone that an instrument produces. I mean, who can't understand that the vibrations from the strings can be felt through the body, and vice-versa? Is that so difficult to grasp? The finish, or "skin" of the body being a small part of the whole.

What it all boils down to is that when you're guitar-shopping and play a few candidates that will take another bite out of your wallet it becomes a simple matter of how a given axe sounds. As has been wisely pointed out elsewhere in this thread, people's ears are all a little bit different, so it becomes a matter of what sounds good to YOU. That's what you're going to end up shelling out your shekels for -- the axe that sounds and plays the best for you.

of course the type of wood, strings and pickups matter a lot more than the finish. i was never arguing that.

speaking of which, ive found d'adarrios to be the longest lasting strings short of elixirs, but i still kill a set of strings in one day of playing. any suggestions other than buying elixirs? or is that my only option?

Was that for me rumblebox? Oh, I didn't mean anything other than it supports your (our) claim about the finish affect among other things, I'm with you remember. :)
