Hi rumblebox,

Why?!?  It was so beautiful......

 Sure, why not? Looks like maybe it was Olympic White? The combination of OW and rosewood is one of my favorites, and that's a nice touch with the tortoise guard. That's a great tortoise pattern on that one.

I guess that you got to practice your relic technique (pretty good), and the artwork is cool, but what was wrong with it that made you want to repaint it? :(

i put too much paint on it and made it too compressed sounding. im gonna use white nitro laquer this time without the relic.

I honestly can't believe anyone thinks a paint job can have a nickel's worth of effect on a guitar's tone. I don't believe it.

Repaint, you thinner!

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I refuse. In 47 years of electric guitar playing, with every finish imaginable, I have come across no evidence that could ever convince me. I don't believe the glue joint nonsense, either. Sorry.

How many times have you tried a guitar, then repainted it with thicker finish than it had originally, then tried it again? I'll guess zero, and if so, then you really have no reference. Similar guitars, with a different finish on each, is not the same comparison. Acoustic resonance does indeed affect the tone of the guitar. Cool thing is, belief has nothing to do with reality sometimes. Fender touts the "thin skin finishes" on some guitars as having better resonance than the thicker skin, maybe that's the evidence that you have been looking for. And Fender has been doing it for much longer than 47 years.

I had my '78 Strat which had a poly finish stripped and repainted with nitro. CRGuitarMan is right, if there was a change in tone I certainly didn't hear it.

Some people can hear it/feel it, some can't. I think that anyone would agree that different materials will have different resonant qualities. For example, wood will transfer vibration much differently than plastic. The difference in a factory poly finish vs nitro finish may be very subtle, but the difference in one coat for the finish vs four coats may be even more noticeable. How many coats of each, and how thick were the finishes in comparison to each other on your guitar? Likely you have no idea.

I suppose that the type of wood, nut, saddles, string material, finish type, block metal, all have no affect on the sound that the guitar produces? If none of this mattered, we could all have cheap plastic bodies on our guitars with the color built in and they would sound the same as a wooden body. Please!

Any type of coating on a wooden body will affect it's resonance compared to the bare wood. If you coat a wooden body with lead, don't you think that it's resonance would be affected? Of course it would. So it is no stretch to believe that other materials can also affect it.

It doesn't really matter what we all think, no one can tell what another person hears and what they don't, that's absurd. We've all had those "Did you hear that?" moments, and many times we don't hear it, but the one that asked certainly heard it.

If you can't tell the difference, doesn't mean that someone else can't.

I preferred TJ Swan Easy Nights wine to all of the more expensive wines. And, of course that means that anyone who disagrees with me must be crazy, because there is no difference, they are all made from grapes. (Mad Dog anyone?)

Well put me in the "I can't hear paint" camp. I'm pretty sure you can put all my pickups and guitar strings in there too!

Either I can't hear it or my amp won't listen.

Seriously though, fair play to those of you who have the ears for that sort of thing. If my ears were that good I'd be earning mega bucks working for big name pro audio companies testing their gear!

Have you ever played a guitar then refinished it?

The only time that paint variety or thickness would have the slightest effect on tone would be in a hollow body electric especially one with a peizo electric pickup as a thinner or stripped finish would allow the wood to resonate more freely and consequently longer. I have a pretty good ear and I have yet to hear a discernable difference in any solid body I've refinished.

Yes. The first guitar that I ever painted came to me with the paint stripped off already (thankfully). It sounded great acoustically, very resonant, I could feel it in my ribs when strumming. The notes would ring out and sustain well when played clean through an amp. I painted it black (bad choice for first time), and I ended up with about 10+ coats of paint and it still didn't look right. So, I finished it with a marble looking finish and several coats of clear. All total it has well over a dozen coats, and now it doesn't sustain and doesn't sound as rich when played acoustically, very noticeable difference compared to the bare wood. The amplified sound is good, but not quite like it was before.

However, I also installed two Bill Lawrence pickups after painting, and it was a good match to get the crisp crunchy sound that I wanted. What I lost in the guitar sustain with the thick paint, I could make up for by using the amp to keep the strings vibrating. I really love the sounds that I get from the guitar and I still have it, a Kramer Pacer. I don't know if it would sound any better with a nicer (thin) paint job on it, but it does sound different with way too much paint.
