MIM Strats, affordable excellent quality.
On the subject of American Made Only. Ok..... take apart your/an MIA Strat and research where the components were manufactured, surprises await you, not all the components of a MIA strat are manufactured stateside.

When did anyone EVER state anywhere EVER that all the components were made in the USA. It is posted here all the time. Of course they are not. The point is that the fit, finish, and assembly is done here.

Blindfolded you would not be able to differentiate between which were MIA or MIM strats, if you had 10 to test out.

This is just not true. I don't have much more to say on this other than your hands must be partially numbed.

Fender does own the manufacturing plant in Mexico which is just over the border, the difference being a lower labor cost which allows Fender to sell a high quality instrument at a lower price point. That is a plus for the consumer.

The difference is in body and neck wood selection, finishing, rolled edges, and fret and nut work.

I seem to remember California was once part of Mexico :?: :?:
As far as made in America Only... :? We've been in a global economy for more than a century, it is just recently that the internet / tech has reinforced that fact.

What?

Forget about the distinction and buy the strat that fits you, regardless of where it was made.

This I agree with.

BTW 50's Classic Series are MIM's. The reason the 50's Classic is more expensive is because it is a higher quality guitar than the standard and is made to replicate 50's vintage attributes at an affordable price point.

I own an MIM ash strat and it is is a fine instrument. The quality is above what I would expect from a $600 guitar and my hat is off to the workers down south.

However there is absolutely no comparison to it and my clapton or the deluxe I just picked up. None. Give the guy some sound advice. Not a diatribe on your feelings about American made products.

Though I was referring to guitars set up for the test, not off the rack, last I was at GC, every strat I picked up was fret proud and most were MIA's. That syndrome is a case of moisture loss which is critical to any guitar and must be at or above a certain point or else the wood does dry out (shrink ) severely. All wood has a certain moisture content, regardless of being finished or a blank.

You were going to have the neck edges rolled, frets crowned and dressed, and nut done prior to the test. So basically spend $$ to make the neck of the MIM feel like the MIA does out of the box?

The wood dries slowly over time. This is not something that cannot be avoided it is a naturally occurring phenomena. This takes a considerable amount of time and is not something you are going to have with an off the rack guitar. Even if it has been on that rack for years.

Really it's just my preferance. If i'm spending this much $$$ I want it to be mia. I try to, when possible, keep my large purchases american made. I am also looking at a 50's Classic Series (0131002304) but it was $200 more that the Standard. What is the cheapest mia Strat? Thanks for the help.

"Standard" Strats are made in Mexico.

"American Standard" Strats are made in ......... America.

A "Standard" Strat can be purchased for $500 (street) new. An "American Standard" Strat can be purchased for $1000.00 and up (street) new.

I think the old saying "Speed costs money. How fast do you want to go?" is applicable here.

If you value your labor as I do mine, you've got more in it than you may realize. If you had to pay someone else to do the mods, and do them as well as you did, it would bring the price up very close, very quickly. I think that your labor/knowledge is very valuable.

Thanks.

Some work I do for money, other work I do out of love for what I am doing. Guess what category this falls into.

I'll put my modified MIM Standard Strat up against an American Standard Strat any day. Hell, I'll put my modified Squier Affinity Tele up against an American Standard Tele too.

With the proper knowledge, time, and resources I totally agree. Any MIM strat can be made to be as good or better than a stock MIA strat. But it does require either the $$ for a pro to do it or a great deal of know how to do it right.

I also agree that putting that kind of effort into an instrument bonds you too it in a special way. Good on you man.

My dad raced way back when with "Wild Willie" Borsch, "Big Daddy" Don Garlits, Don "The Snake" Prudhome, Tom "The Mongoose" McEwen, and others that I can't remember their names. His dragster was called "Snuffy Smith", a green sort of model T looking open top car, with the cartoon character Snuffy painted on the side, similar in style to Willies car. The engine seemed like it was about 5 feet tall with the blower, and I used to have a front view picture of him during a huge sideways burn-off, smoke everywhere, and his head just visible with WW 2 style goggles and cloth headwear, awesome!

Have you been to the Nationals much, or were you a participant, or a street-rodder? I lived across the street from the Winter Nationals here in Indy (actually Clermont) for years, and we would walk to the track for the races. He loved going there even years after he retired from racing. Something about that smell.....mmmmmmm, love it! I haven't been to the track for probably 20 years.

When buying a guitar I wouldn't care where it was made as long as it wasn't in a sweat shop(which is why I would never buy a Cort)or in a country that was a known supporter of terrorism.I bought my most recent Strat after trying out several that were MIA,MIJ and MIM and I picked an MIM not because it was cheaper as price was no object at the time.I was looking for the guitar that played and sounded the best to me and the MIM Jimmie Vaughn was the one I picked.
