So you want a stock '50s style Strat. That's what they played.

No they didin't they would have done some 50s mods on them like new pickups i cant even get holly's sound with his original strat no matter how close i get it needs Reverb. Lots of it

I respectfully disagree for a few reasons.

1. Strats were very new and these guys were musicians who wrote music, played rhythm/ lead and sang. They were very much like all of us when we started out. Neither of them had a lot of money and swopping out electronics was the last thing on their minds. If they wanted a different sound they turned a knob; not swop out electronics. They were worried about playing music, not tweaking guitar electronics. I would wager that they never even thought about it.

2. You will never and I mean never sound just like Buddy Holly, unless of course you are Buddy Holly. You'll get close, but not perfect. The truth is that every player is different and unique. No one sounds like you and no one sounds like me. I'll give you an example. I play a lot like Eric Clapton, but if Eric Clapton were to play his guitar, stop, hand it to me and I start playing; it wouldn't sound the same. Nothing has changed, just the player. Much of a player’s sound comes from his figure tips, attack and even the picks and strings he uses.

I'll a bet a Buddy Holly style player, playing a stock 1954-1958 Strat and the same amp that Holly used could do a pretty good job of sounding like Buddy Holly, but it wouldn't be perfect.

3. There are so many variables that go into the sound of the recording you’re listening to: a. The amp, b. the guitar, c. the player, d. the recording equipment, e. the engineer in the recording studio, f. the studio itself, g. the air density in the room.

In the final analysis as to whether these two players made modifications to their guitars we'll never know. Could they have modified their guitar? Possibly. Do I think they did? No. But I will look into it.
Having said all of that I’ll say this. Even though I believe that all of these players played stock Strats I also believe that every Strat is unique and different. No two Strats sound just the same for a million reasons, such as wood used, to who made the pups that day.
Thanks for your input.

That is ALL it comes down to.

Yup, this is how it works.

And it's why Hubert Sumlin will never get a signature Strat (he's a well known goldtop and Strat player), despite the fact that he's responsible for all the great guitar parts on pretty much every Howlin' Wolf track.

I love his stuff on Howlin' Wolf's records.

I asked Mike Eldred about Buddy Holly's '58 Strat that John Page worked on. He tells me that it was stock and that he played it for a bout 3 months.

Back in the late 50s there was no real after market for guitars.
You played what you had.
Even guitar string choice was very limited.
Guitarists are spoiled rotten these days.

I do not think that they should have signature series for stock guitar played by artists, but would like to see a re issue for the Buddy Holly Straocaster.

It would be nice to see a reissue of Buddy's original Strat, if only in recognition of what Buddy having one did for Fender through out the world.

If they did a Cooder caster, I might be interested. Coolest sounding slide machine ever made.
