With the myriad of signature Fender guitars produced do we really need a signature guitar which is nothing more than stock guitar played by a famous person?

In contrast the following guitars are produced, but are unique for the following reason:
Blackie: Iconic guitar made from several Strats.
Eric Clapton Strat: Noiseless PUPs and Midrange boost
Andy Summers Tele: Bound Tele body w/ maple neck, HB PUP in neck, onboard pre-amp, out of phase switch, and locking tuning keys.
David Gilmour Strat: Unique paint job, special pups and electronics.
Buddy Guy Strat: Iconic guitar with unique paint job and special pups and electronics.
John 5: Unique looks, parts and electronics.
Richie Blackmore: Okey so not unique in the looks, but has unigue pups.

See a trend. What do all of the guitars on the poll have in common? None of them are stock.

I'm not trying to bash anyone's heroes; just making a point. Let me know if you agree or disagree.

I also think they should only make artist guitars that are unique.

So long as the artist played a stock Strat why pay extra for a signature? I do think that Fender should put any past artist that played a particular version of the Strat under the artist button for the instrument. It appears now that there are only current players listed why not add who in the past played that guitar.

I personally don't care to have a guitar that is just like someone else's, even if they are a guitar hero, and I really don't want a guitar with someone else's name written on it, regardless of whose name it is. JMO

I would vote if the poll had an option; "I don't care for signature series guitars".

Now, if the artist actually signed a guitar for me that I already owned, that might be cool. I just worked on a Peavey guitar belonging to a friend that was signed by all the members of Lynyrd Skynyrd (before the plane crash), and that was very cool. Although, I wouldn't want to play it for fear of rubbing off the signatures, just cool for a collection.

100% my feeling as well, put me down for the same option.

I voted for "Fender should only make signature guitars which are unique"

That would make the Malmsteen and the Blackmore Strat the most unique Signature Strats out there. These two guitars have a special neck not just pups or electronic added/changed.

Cheers,
Robin

The Signature Series is more about marketing and selling guitars than anything else. That being said I own a SRV strat that I bought in 06.Not because of the name, but it had features that no other guitar had like a chunky neck with tall frets and a 12" radius.I also like the sound of the Texas Specials.Nice to be able to grab a guitar already having some of the features I want.I honestly could care if it had Chumley from Pawn Stars name on it.

I'm digging the comments. As to a EC "Brownie" Strat, I think that you missed the point. Also if Fender do that Strat it wouldn't look like the one you posted. It would have more yellow and you wouldn't really see the wood grain, which would be very little.

Two of my Strats are sigs and though both players are huge influences none of that came into play when I bought them. I have a Clapton which I bought because I love the tone you can get with the TBX and Mid Boost and a Beck for the Hot Noiseless pups,LSR nut, 2 point trem and locking tuners, both kick $@! and are night and day from each other. I have also been tempted to grab a Dave Murray Strat and I am not even really a fan of the band but I dig the ax. Signature guitars do not bother me at all, as long as it is just some scribbled signature somewhere on the guitar which no one outside of a guitarist would even know it is a sig. I do draw the line though on models that are just too closely associated with a certain player such as a Vanhalen Frankenstrat or a Les Paul with a Bullseye, things on that level where people are going to see the guitar and think of that certain player. If I really liked the SRV Strat and was going to gig with it I would have to change the pick guard as I would not dig the big SRV decal. A lot of those type guitars are good if you are in a cover band or just such a huge fan you want one to keep at home or use to record with.

Fender should only make guitars for those who sell a lot of records and will get Fender's product seen by the most people.

That is ALL it comes down to.
