I put this together with Fender parts, mostly from ebay. It was a good learning experience and a great result. You can hand pick every part and get just what you want.

The ash tray makes palm muting impossible.

Most of us remove them before playing (they snap on and off pretty easily).

Yeah I looked at their site, using their body builder and neck builder you can easily blow past the $700 range for both, but outside of Ebay (i'm hesitant on buying parts there) I haven't found anyone that does that level of work on the body and neck for less.

This "Parts-o-caster" was assembled using genuine Fender pieces purchased exclusively on Ebay......

One-hundred percent content, in fact. Every part -- every screw, nut, and bolt, the tuners, the electronics, even the period-correct G&G case. Total outlay: less than $800 in all.
hey arjay, that is it an EJ palomino body, what pickups are you using with the S1?

As long as you stick with reputable vendors (check their feedback, ask them questions, discuss with your buddies) and plan the build out beforehand to minimize "surprises", you'll do fine. And you'll end up with the exact guitar you want, save some $$$ in the process, and own the bragging rights on a job well done.

Then what's the point of them?

I've been playing one of my Strats with it fitted, and found it comes in handy for resting the hand while picking.
Not totally useless.

Just on palm-muting, Is it mandatory to have your hand over the bridge???
Either I've been missing something for many, many years or I do the same thing elsewhere on the strings. I have no unwanted notes, can still cut a chord off short, but my strumming hand is nowhere near the bridge.
Slightly back on topic- When you're shopping online for gold parts for your build, it's hard to resist a vintage trem cover for eight bucks :D
