Howdy, boys...and girls...and um, anybody who's undecided.

Ahem.

Anyway, I have the opportunity to get a MIM Standard Stratocaster (at least I think it's a standard, waiting for confirmation from Fender Customer Service).

Black finish, maple fingerboard, chrome hardware, tremolo (missing arm), SSS pup config, etc. Decent shape--it's used but not abused, a few scratches here and there...it would be a great beater/modder. It comes with the Fender molded LSD case (PVC? Plastic!).

The serial number is MN394609

What's the age of the guitar and the going rate for such an axe?

The guy said to name my price; I don't want to screw him but I don't want to screw myself either.

I'll try to post some pics soon to help out with identification.

MN3+ 5 digits = 1993-1994

Current MIM Standards sell new for $500.00.

As the guitar appears to be nothing special, i wouldn't pay more than $200 for it.

Yea, $200 is a good price, maybe up to $250 if you really dig it but anything more is too much imho.

Played it through my rig.

Nice tone--better pickups than I expected. Rich and full in Neck + Middle positions, a bit too bright in Bridge. 2 & 4 were nice Cray-ish in character.

Liked the neck--very similar (dang near identical) to my MIM Tele Special.

Body was a bit scratched up, usual wear for a 18 year old guitar, more noticeable because of it being black.

Overall, I wasn't in love with the guitar. It was nice, but I wasn't ready to let go of any money (especially for something that's not radically different from what I already own, sound- or feel-wise). I low-balled him on the price ($150) and told him to call me if he didn't get any other bites.
As a gesture of thanks, I printed up the spec sheet I received from Fender Customer Service...it was made in 7/93, BTW.

I'm saving up for a metal-bodied resonator, and this would slow that acquisition down.

$150 would be a nice score. What resonator? New stock or vintage stuff?

MIMs can also be great main guitars. Don't sell them short as inferior; IMO they're not, they're just made somewhere else.
