Apples and oranges. Back in 2003 I was faced with a similar dilemma. I was all prepared to buy a nice guitar and was dead set on an RG. Then I actually played one. It felt flimsy, had a thin uncomfortable neck, and just wasn't what I thought. I tried a few Schecters and other brands too. I was getting really disappointed and disheartened when the sales guy took down an American Deluxe Fat Strat off the wall and said "Try this." Complete night and day difference. It was obvious I was looking for the Strat.

the strat is a rock icon. always has been, always will be. when your holding a strat, you feel like your holding rock history in your hands. when you hold an ibanez, you just feel like your holding an ibanez

They are both completely different animals. I play Ibanez guitars too, and I've owned RG's in the past and I never could get used to the Wizard II neck, I find it too thin (alot of Ibanez players think the Wizard II is to thick, pure insanity), it doesn't feel like you are holding much of anything, same thing with the SA series. What first got me interested in playing a Strat was the neck, the rounded profile felt very comfortable to me, very similar to my two SZ's. I also love the HSS pickup configuration, I have humbuckers in the bridge of my Strats, a Hot Rails in one and a Pearly Gates in the other, single coils are nice, but I need a humbucker. I also don't care for Floyd Rose type trems. I've tried many different electric guitars through out the years and the only two that I have honestly felt completely comfortable with are the Ibanez SZ and Fender Strats. My recommendation is the Strat or if you go with an Ibanez, try the SZ if you can still find one, they've been discontinued.

You got to sit down and play them both. Ibanez makes some good stuff. My $200 Ibanez GAX has a better fit and finish than some of the MIM Strats I have seen at GC. But playing them both is the way to determine whats is best for you. Choose what fells right to you, remember your are buying a guitar not an ICON.

Hmm...As someone who likes the body of a strat but doesn't have any feelings of nostalgia (sorry...I like my workhorses)....I can empathize with this issue completely. You can get a strat, or something that looks like a strat that's got bells and whistles.

I guess the issue at the end of the day is what you're playing now in terms of music, and what you might see yourself playing....I guess as far as the Ibanez goes, the biggest aspect of this might be the 24-fret neck and the Floyd Rose.

Do you use a tremolo bar? Do you want to deal with maintenace issues and restringing your guitar? Floyds are OK if you break a string and want to attach it on the spot...but re-stringing 'em? I never enjoyed it. I also don't like the intonation when you get into different string gauges.

I would argue the strat not because of nostalgia, but for the simple fact that no matter what kind of music you might have to play, a strat can fit the role. The downside to the strat is specifically the single coil in the bridge position (which the new standard has addressed). I also like a modded pickup in the neck position, but that's just me.

What I also like about my strat over my Ibanez (yeah, I own both) is that if I'm playing with another guitarist, I pretty much have a brighter tone...and my guitar sounds much better clean.

So as someone who used to play Ibanez....a strat is something that you can take into a multitude of situations and play. Ibanez is a great rock guitar (specifically hard rock/metal), but to be honest I found it lacking as soon as I started playing other styles of music.

Hope this helps...

Do you play shred and metal? Because that is what most Ibanez's are specialized for

I feel the exactly the same way........but it may be mostly because of the age group (over 50) I'm in.

I don't care about the iconic status of Fender and the Stratocaster. I bought a strat because I love the look and feel and tonal versatility. I also bought one because you will not find another $1000 electric guitar of the same overall quality, in my experience. You will not get a neck so perfect it feels like glass or dead on intonation above the 12th fret on a $1000 Ibanez or ESP or anything else, but you will on a $1000 Fender ;)

The Fender will probably hold its value much better down the road, I would stick with that.

If you're looking for future value Fender. If you're looking for a more metal/hard rock tone I'd go with the RG. Just good old rock I'd go with the Fender.

A Stratocaster can be a lot of different guitars. If you want a hum-cancelling, thick full Blues tone, a Strat in neck mid with the tone knobs down and a Fender tube amp will do it. Then, if you want to chime, turn up the tone knobs and down the gain. I fyou want bright vintage or country, go with bridge and up the treble. A Strat can do pretty much whatever you want.

Ibanez has been making more frets - 24 and such. Just bend the string and you get the same place at the 22d fret.

Imho, Ibanez is a technocratic company without authenticity or the feel. A few of their models capable guitarists like Vai swear by, and so for that type of sound you have to say they are okay.
