Hey guys,

Just trying to find out; was there a clear lacquer used over Fiesta Red on the late 50's - 60's Fender guitars?

Also, can anyone tell me whether the Custom Shop clear coats their Fiesta Red guitars?

Thanks for any input

Russ :)

On page 55 of A. R. Duchossoirs' book "The Fender Stratocaster" they used three different coats on guitars...a sealer or undercoat, a color coat, and then finally a clear coat up until 1968 when CBS switched over to Polyester, hence the thick finishes of the time. Sometimes they missed the final clear coat and thus some have faded differently over the years...of course differences in fading or color change, can be caused by how much time it has spent in a smokey bar too.

As for the Custom Shop, could not find anything in writing stating thier finishing procedures, but the vintage reissues have always used the old laquer finishing process so would figure since they use laquer they would use the same process.

Any one else have the skinny on the CS finishing process?

I love Fiesta Red...one of the prettiest, eye-catching hues of the vintage "Custom Colors"...

However, it's one of the hardest colors to photograph accurately, and it fades so uniquely (depending how that guitar was originally finished or treated afterwards) that no two look exactly alike, especially in pics.

My Fiesta Red Strat looks very orange--a bright, burnt orange is how I would describe it. But I've seen some (both vintage and re-issue) Fiesta Red guitars that look more pink-ish. Some have faded to a more peach-like hue.

When I painted my 2-door hardtop '64 Falcon, I took my Strat down to the paint shop and said, "Match this." The lady said, "Ok, leave it here and I'll get it for you..."

The Lady Armadillo laughed at that silly woman, and said, "There's not an inkling of a chance that's going to happen. How else can he match it?"

We looked through a dozen catalogs, and found a suitable match; she said, "You know, that kinda looks like an old color that my dad used to call Fiesta Red..." She was not aware that many guitars of the 50s and 60s (mine is a '62 reissue) were finished in the same hues as old cars.

Yes Fender did use automotive colors and in fact Fiesta Red has got to be Cardinal Red, LPB is a dead ringer for Nassau Blue Metallic, Inca Silver is Sebring Silver...and if Surf Green isn't Chevy's Turquoise I don't know what color it is. Since both GM and Fender were using Dupo Color Laquers, what are the odds they are the same color...pretty good in my book.

I lust after a Fiesta red, 12" radius maple necked Strat with a laquer finish. The undercoat color will determine the hue of the red as it ages. A gold undercoat will tend to make it appear more orange with time whereas a white undercoat tends to fade to a more pinkish or coral hue...

How can it be so mint, it looks so sad that no one played it.
