i just watched a HArley Davidson documentary and this post came to mind.....

there was a commercial, an old grandpa on the porch surrounded by about 4 grandkids, and Grandpa was talking about an old Harley Davidson in great detail...

the kids excited, said "you had a real Harley Davidson grandpa!!?"

and granp's looked at the ground in depression and shook his head, and mumbled...

"nah....I bought aluminum siding for the house instead...."

1) I'd vote doing something else to pay off a short term loan. 2nd small job/ temp

2) If you sell it, immediately shave some off and get another Stratocaster and use the left over for bills

3) dont pay your bills and let your credit score go to hell. its all a banking scam anyway, designed to create fear in humans....

and the upside, if your credit is shot to hell, you dont have to worry about identity theft and running up new credit cards.

and you'll still have your Strat.!

good luck...

I have a similar dilemma but with a twist....I bought a Sunburst Strat in '67 from its original owner and have had it in its case ever since as I went acoustic a short time after I bought.....I recently contemplated selling it (I also have the tube amp that came with it) and someone looked at my pictures and pointed out the case might be a '63 (the serial number on the guitar puts it about a '63) but he said the neck was a '66 so to make sure I undid the neck and it was stamped 13 OCT66 B - so then I lifted the pick guard looking for a body date and there was none and the pick ups had 12-22-66 written on them so we were thinking it really is a '66 but we can't explain the '63 serial number on it...so can anyone tell me if there is a body date somewhere els on the guitar or why the serial number might be a '63 but neck/pick ups say '66 and what it might be worth today or if I should hang on to it longer or??? AND.....what "if" the body is a '63 and the neck/pickups are '66 how would that affect price....or why would a '63 serial number be on a '66 guitar? I have had it since '67 and it has never been out of my hands...

I would venture that there are very few people who don't regret selling something like a music instrument, amplifier or even Harley (as mentioned) that didn't regret the short-term gain.

But bills are bills - and necessities come first.

If you need to sell - be aware that Ebay now charges 10% commission - so you lose that.

There is a better site - reverb dot com - that charges 3.5% and many people who love old guitars such as yours frequent that site.

But still - look closely at the value of that guitar to you (or your family) and be certain - that could be the right decision, but you want to be sure. My strat is a 2008 Mahogany HSS strat - with the amount of available strats on the market it won't appreciate - but it's so near and dear to me that it would be the last to be considered for sale.

Be well.

KEEP IT!! If you have owned it for a long time it will have more sentimental value than monetary value. As regards money it will only become rarer as the years go by and like Stradivarius violins will become legendary and sought after. I have a 61 Strat I bought from new and have left it in my will to be kept in the family in perpetuity as it is the closest thing to a family heirloom and has my whole lifes history embedded in it. My very best companion through all lifes ups and downs. To me it has no cash value. I could not replace it. If it can be kept with photos from when I bought it, my descendants will be glad I wanted it passed on.
Violin players worship their Strads, guitar players worship their Strats

Sell it, and buy gold and silver. It's only a guitar, and when the economy crashes it will be good for firewood and nothing else.

in 1974 i sold my blue/maple neck early 60's strat to a friend because i wanted a les paul. he gave me about the same amount for the strat (500.00) as the gibson cost so i was happy.

So you sold the early 1960s Strat to buy the early 70s Gibson Les Paul? I fully understand the regret ... but do you still have that bad-ass Les Paul??

Did you get the date codes from the back of the pots?
Is the pickguard white or is it that "mint green" color?
It is possible that it is a 1966 with an earlier serial number plate. They weren't very good about using them in numerical order.

Even if the body was from 1963, its value would be that of a 1966.

The dates were written on the back of the pick ups...ONLY dates on it that i could find..someone told me to look under the springs in the back of the guitar but I am not willing to take that apart because it is more fragile.....the pick guard is white
