I have a 66 Strat (133,000's serial, red, very good condition with original case).
Determining the value seems to be difficult. Not sure if it's better to hold on to it for investment or sell it?

And if selling is an option, not sure how?

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

My advice...keep it...I have long regretted selling my 1962 Sunburst Strat even though I got good money for it in the day.

If you must sell, go to Gruhn's and get a good documented appraisel...then put it on E-bay with a reserve and let them know you reserve the right to close the auction at any time just in case you get cold feet and decide to keep that righteous puppy!

FWIW

Keep the guitar. How many 66 are on the market yet? how many will be in a few years?
You can collect money, you can´t collect 66 Stratocasters.
Sell things you can buy new if you have to.

Cheers,
Robin

- that pretty much sums it up! Money can't buy happiness.... unless of course, you use said money to buy a 66 Strat???

'66 absolute worst year for Strats. Absolutely no collector value and total pieces of junk. Most times you'd have to pay someone to take it off your hands. I'll be a nice guy and let you ship it to me just to save yourself from the embarrassment of having such a hunk of junk in your house.

Seriously, if you don't really need tha money, keep the thing. They are not going to go down in value. Unless it's in absolutely pristine unplayed type of condition, you're not going to hurt a thing by playing the snot out of it. Just don't try to refinish it or polish anything up. Keep that 45 years of patina in tact.

If you really do want to send it to me...

You're stealing my shtick, pal!

In all seriousness, the previous posters are preaching the gospel. Unless you need the money for a liver transplant or your kid just got accepted into Harvard, I'd keep that '66. I once owned one, back in '67. And not a day goes by that I don't confront the fact that I stepped on my dick when I foolishly traded it away for a '64 Gibson SG Standard.

JMO (although it seems to be shared by the majority who weighed in on this topic)

I will give you seventy-eight American dollars and two slightly used doggy chew toys today...

Just kidding--If you don't need the money, sit on it for a while. The market might start rebounding in a couple of years, and then you'll say, "Dadgummit!"

Don't,Don't,Don't sell it.The base value of your Strat-a sunburst-if in good condition with the original case is around $12,000 -$14000 and the value will no doubt increase yearly. The Strats immediately post CBS are pretty well near the value of the last of the L series as a lot of them contain NOS pre CBS parts. So if you don't want to hear a chorus of "I told You Sos" and untold heartache down the road keep it in your possession unless you are in need of a liver, heart or some other important organ.

i agree - keep it!

in 1974 i sold my l.p. blue/maple neck early 60's strat to a friend because i wanted a les paul. he gave me about the same amount for the strat (500.00) as the gibson cost so i was happy.

you don't know how much i miss that guitar, and it's not just what it's worth today, but that was a guitar my dad bought me when 1 was 9 years old.

unless you absolutely need the money, hang on to it

i would keep it for now and re think selling it in a few years. The economy is in rough shape and people are not buying expensive vintage guitars. I read in Guitar aficionado the price of a vintage strat has gone down in value by 50 percent.

The market for vintage guitars hit a bubble in 2006. They've been sliding for some time now. Hold on to it until it recovers. Do not sell. Re-evaluate in two years.
