On mine it adds the bridge humbucker to the mix. I'm not a fan personally, I find it as subtle as a slap in the face and quite muddy. If I wanted that, I'd buy a Gibson...

The S-1 does different things on different guitars because Fender has used it for several applications:

American Series HSS - regular single coil pickups and splittable humbucker, changes the series/parallel configuration and splits the bridge humbucker (made 2003-2007)

American Series HH - splittable humbuckers so S-1 splits the humbuckers more than changing the series/parallel (made 2003-2006)

American Deluxe SSS - stacked noiseless single coils so S-1 changes the series/parallel configuration

American Deluxe HSS - stacked noiseless single coil pickups and splittable humbucker, changes the series/parallel configuration and splits the bridge humbucker

I know the S-1 changed slightley as of 2010 on the American Deluxes.

Check ebay - the American Strat HH with Fender humbuckers and the S-1 switch was only made from about July/August 2003 until the end of 2006.

Fender made an earlier version without the S-1 switch but with Seymour Duncan humbuckers from 1996 through July/August 2003. The earlier version was called the Big Apple Strat from 1996 to June 2000, then it was called the American Double Fat Strat from June 2000 until the Fender humbucker/S-1 version came out in July/August 2003.

Anyone had tried the S-1 switch with an HHH setup? This makes for an extremely versatile array of tones going from bright and chimey to fat and dirty and so on...

Never say never, but right now the only HH Fenders are MIM models.

Keep looking around; they pop up from time to time. Depending on market conditions they could go for more or for less than their SSS or HSS brothers. I got one in on a trade valued at $700 back in early 2005 and wound up consigning it a coupld of months later toward a new amp. The shop wound up getting a bit over $800 for it - a great deal for me since they didn't charge me a comission since I was buying a $1K amp from them.

yes, i hope they will make an american blacktop :D
you got big apple or american series ?

i cant desribe how much i love my stratocaster right now
i have 2 stratocasters
fender blacktop strat and squeir which has changed its pickup into seymour duncan humbuckers

i feel really really great with this axes
got a more punch, sustain, responsive picking more than a traditional strat
i dont like single coil, its too weak for me
i know, i will lose the twank of fender, but no problem, i dont and cant play jazz :D (just blues 8) )

a lot of people just say go for gibson if you want some humbucker tones
but not all people like the sound of mahagony
its too bassy for me
i just like alder, because it has a punch in mid range and bright

stratocaster shape is the coolest one (IMO)
its agressive but still classic
