I've never heard this before. Has anyone tried this and what are your results? Also, if this is recommended then why aren't they setup this way from the factory?

"Stratocaster guitars can have four distinctive types of bridges. The most well-known bridge is the vintage-style "synchronized" tremolo...

First, remove the tremolo back cover. Check your tuning. For a vintage-style tremolo bridge, a great way to enhance its performance is to pull the bridge back flush with the body using the tremolo arm. Then loosen all six screws located at the front edge of the bridge plate, raising them so that they all measure approximately 1/16" (1.6 mm) above the top of the bridge plate. Then tighten the two outside screws back down until they're flush with the top of the bridge plate. The bridge will now pivot on the outside screws, leaving the four inside screws in place for bridge stability."

Where did you get this information? I have never heard of it, nor anyone trying it. I am interested to see the opinions on this subject are. I do not know if I am sold on the idea. I am no rocket scientist, but it seems to be that the Tremolo would be more prone to instability due to 2 screws holding the plate in place instead of all six.

I know that the 2 point tremolo works on the same idea, but the plate is made to pivot on the screws, not to be secured to the guitar by the screws.

Hey rkreisher,

I took this off the fender website. Here's the link. Look under the Tremolo heading.

The Fender support is great and all the things really work. If you set up the guitar the way it´s described you have a good start.
All of the six screws hold the bridge the advantage is the trem uses the outer screws as pivot points only.

Cheers,
Robin

Hi djwhitjr: it's an absolutely normal adjustment that many make. Perfectly well known.

Though many of us also don't do it: it is not essential.

Cheers - C

I set it up like that on a beater guitar that I was using to practice setting up guitars. I seemed to work good. I eventually sold the beater for $25.

I thought everyone did it this way.I have from the sixties (gives smoother action on the trem). Ted

Bologna! If you study the vintage bridge, you can see that there is no pivot point, the bridge plate still slides up and down on the screws. I know that it is on the Fender site, but it is rubbish. The best that this will do is minimize the amount the the Strat goes out of tune when you whammy. And if those screws are tightened down a little too much (or if you whammy more than a tiny bit), you'll get some nice divots under the bridge on the body, further worsening tuning stability, and limiting the amount of travel for the trem.

Orly? But I bet with a thinner finish the bridge should pivot better...right?

 No, it still wont pivot even if it's coated with sucker juice, snake oil, or no finish at all.

Just slides up and down the screws all day long, that's all. Now if you could machine a groove in the bridge screws at just the right place you would have an actual pivot point for the bridge plate. Check the screws for yourself, note the smoothness of the shaft, no place for the bridge plate to pivot. And, no the bridge plate doesn't pivot on the bevel/body contact point either.

Fender response "We install the bridges the way we do because we are stiupid"

Next new threads will start..."What's wrong with my intonation". "My guitar won't keep in tune".
