Hello everyone! I've just registered into the forum and though this is my first message..

I've just bought a Fender American Vintage "Thin Skin Nitro" '54 Stratocaster from Wildwood.. http://wildwoodguitars.com/electrics/fe ... /index.php .. The guitar is fantastic!! but has a very very different sound character to my other '96 American Standard Stratocaster (Alder body, Rosewood fingerboard).. You know, the new one has Ash body and Maple fingerboard.. I'm trying to get used to the new character.. Anyway...

According to the specs of this instruments; the guitar has Custom Shop 50's pickups with 5 way-switch.. At first, I thought they were "Fat 50's", but now I think they aren't.. Because there is not hum-cancelling in the positions 2 and 4.. According to the official information for the Fat 50's, there should be hum-cancelling because of the middle pickup.. Then I thought the pickups on my guitar are Custom Shop 54's.. Am I right? Or they are completely different pickups?

And can I reverse the middle pickup's phase to have hum-cancelling? and would you recommend this?

Regards..

If the magnets of the middle pickup aren't out of phase with the other two pickups, then reversing the wires would not make it humcancelling when in switch positions 2 & 4.

Do you have a compass with which to check the pickups' magnetic polarity?

Hmm.. Unfortunately don't have.. But I think hum is not a big deal, cause I'm very happy with the sound.

Do you have a guess which the pickups are as mentioned as Custom Shop 50's in the specs?

Could be 57/62 pickups, they're apparently stock on american vintage strats..

Edit: Or they could OF COURSE be the custom shop 54 pickups. Silly me :)
