Rob in my past experiences people who to put it politely, don't fully understand why you should shim use them incorrectly to raise the heel end of the fretboard whilst lowering the nut end. As the over all fretboard line would appear when compared to the string line. Rather than go through the process of adjusting neck relief, maybe the nut slots and then saddle height.
Their goal being to get a string that sits as parallel to the fret tops as possible. I couldn't tell you if that is a common malaise of DIY setups in the US. But I've seen a good bit of it here in the UK on all brands of guitar. Fender do seem to suffer it quite a bit. I suspect because people think their getting this awesome guitar, they should be able to have a string height of 0.00001mm at the 9th fret with no fret buzz. Or some similar wild expectation.

As I said previous, shims are not a bad thing if you like your guitar to have it's saddle adjustment screws poking out less. Or there is genuine cause to amend the line of the neck pocket floor. Something that is very very rare these days. It's just when shims are used for mega low action by people not fully understanding how a guitar string's vibration arc is greater in the middle than it is at either end. Then getting a load of fret buzz.
A case of a little knowledge being dangerous.

I have plenty of saddle screw adjustment left on all the srrings. I dont think my action expectations are beyond sensible. Just under 2mm feels good for me. And thats how my guitar has been set up since the day i got it, plus my two other strats, one being a Squier, are both set up very similar with no problem. I had another mess around with it yesterday evening before i took it in to the shop today and at its worst i ended up with a relief in excess of 21 thou and a string height of just under 3mm. Totally unplayable for me , but just done as an excersise to try and cure the buzz. But it was still present between 3rd and 17th frets, with a string height big enough to park a car in. I personally think something is loose or ill fittng somewhere. Nothing requiring a shim at all. Just somehting i cant find  :D

yep Niki, sounds like we agree on the shim thang as well as the phenomenom of how they are often used.
DC01, concerning Custom Care, and service in general, I would always advise bringing it to the dealer you bought it from. At the same time, it IS your guitar and the choice is totally yours. If you bring the instrument to another place....and they are amenable to helping you, why not? I wish I could tell you that I know the ins and outs and details of service outside the U.S., but alas I cannot. So take what i say about it with a grain of salt.
What I WILL tell you is that, if there is a problem that's determined to be a factory defect, we will take care of it.
Hope that helps a bit.
All the best,
rob

Just an update. Heard back from the shop today. The tech gave it a full set up and apparently found a problem with the pick ups. Couldn't quite hear what he said because it was noisy at work at the time. So not 100% sure yet to what it was but will find out tom when i pick it up.

Well pickups DO have magnets so if they are too close to the string,buzz-hum-zing could happen.
Anyway....glad its in for a look-see.
Cheers,
rob

Picked it up and well pleased with the results. Back to the guitar the had the buy me, play factor :D :D
Turns out that it was a couple of things. Following a good set up. Found that pick up screw spring wasn t sitting properly and having a little rattle and also pick up height was a touch to high adding to it. I suspect the two problems together added to the confusion i had trying to diagnose it. Thanks for all the input everyone. Im well chuffed its all sorted.
