On the American Tone 2 setting it states Middle and Bridge settings.
Does this mean that it only works when using these two pickups together?
Does it also work individually in position 1 and 3?

Not entirely sure I understand what you're asking, but on any 3 single coil pickup Strat, the 5 way pickup selector switch gives you the following p/up selections:

1 (switch position nearest the bridge) = Bridge p/up only
2 = Bridge and Middle p/ups together
3 = Middle p/up only
4 = Middle and Neck p/ups together
5 (switch position nearest the neck) = Neck p/up only.

You might occasionally encounter a 3 way switch (on re-ssues or original 1950s gtrs!). This just gives you the 3 p/ups only without any combinations of p/ups.

If you're talking about the rotary tone pot controls, then the middle knob controls tone on the neck pickup and then the back knob - usually - controls the tone on the middle pickup. Sometimes it controls the bridge pickup tone, depending on how the guitar was wired.

Now, in switch position 4 (see above) the neck pickup tone control will affect only half of the sound as that position is made up of 2 pickups together. You're only controlling the tone for the neck pickup and the middle pickup is left alone.

Similarly, in switch position 2 (see above) the other tone pot will only control half of that 2 pickup combination (either the middle or bridge pickup -depending on how the guitar is wired). The other pick/up in that combination will not be affected..UNLESS the 2nd tone pot is wired to control both the middle and bridge pickups together..

Sorry, it's much more straight forward in practice than it sounds!

On the guitar you refer to, if I read your post properly, it seems that the 2nd (back) tone pot is wired to control both the middle pickup and the bridge pickup. In that case the knob will control tone on switch positions 1 2 & 3, and also half of position 4. The other tone knob will control the other half of position 4, and 5 exclusively..

Hope that answers your question.

I see, in position two both bridge and middle pups are adusted equally tone wise.
It is becoming more and more clear that it is an American Standard Stratocaster that I want.
You guys are all good,
great support I am getting in getting answers.
Sincerely,
Ronald

No, you're not quite getting it yet; let me make this a bit more simple for you. The tone controls on the American Standard function this way - the neck pickup is wired to the upper tone control. Both the middle and the bridge pickups are wired to the lower tone control so it adjusts the tone for both the middle and the bridge pickups simultaneously - meaning if you are using the bridge pickup and set the tone control on "5" instead of "10", then the tone will still be on "5" when you switch to the middle pickups. The two tone controls do operate interactively in one position on the 5-way switch - when the middle and neck pickups are selelcted:

Position 1: Bridge pickup/bottom tone control functions
Position 2: Bridge + Middle pickups/bottom tone control functions for both pickups
Position 3: Middle pickup/bottom tone control functions
Positon 4: Middle + Neck pickups/bottom tone control adjusts the Middle pickup,the top tone control adjusts the neck pickup, and both interact
Position 5: Neck pickup/top tone control functions

Again, this is the "modern" wiring found on American Standards and similar guitars; other Strats have different wiring. Hope that helps.

I see nothing incorrect about the OP's statement. A picture is easier to understand than a lot of words. :wink:
