Hi folks still a newbie here. Still "learning" how to play my 2007 MIM, given to me as a stress relief tool last year from my wife, I love her! When I started taking lessons my instructor and a highly recomended guitar tech both suggested I use Rotosound 10's for what I wanted to learn to play, 70's rock and blues, Clapton, Allman Brothers and even Santana. Anyway, I had "the little girl" set up using Rotosound 10s and lately I am having more and more difficulty finding new strings locally. Are these strings falling out of favor? Any recommendation on other string brands? If I decide to go to another brand will I need a new setup? Thanks for the advice.

I use Elixir 10-46. they are a little pricey but last a long time. :)

Hi Huse, welcome to the Forum.

The significant question here is: where is local? Where I live I can get Rotosound Strings very easily - no sign of them falling out of favor. I buy big batches of them from online sellers for maximum value for money. I expect you can do the same where you live.

I use Rotosounds Yellows most of the time, and sometimes Fender Super Bullets. The only problem is that neither of those companies offer strings as singles (though Rotosound do give you that extra top string "free"), so for those rare string breakages I also have a drawer full of singles in various sizes from D'Addario. And frankly if you ever need a backup string brand D'Addario is as good as any. I don't think there is a seriously important difference between D'Addario and Rotosound: they mix perfectly satisfactorily, far as my ears and fingers are concerned.

So that would be my go-to brand if Rotos or Fenders weren't available. You can get D'Addarios anywhere that strings are sold.

Cheers - C

Thanks Ceri, I live in the Phoenix AZ area. Around here GC quit carrying Rotosounds and the kids at the local Mom and Pop store don't ever seem to know if the owner ordered any. I was going to look into buying on line at Musicians Friend or other store.
Thanks

I'm not in the US but I bet you have online discount string sellers like we do where I live.

Perhaps someone here can recommend a site and get you on your way. I notice that www.stringsandbeyond.com stock Rotosound. $8.49 for Yellows - that sound a fair price? Do American Forum users think that's a good seller, or know a better one? Anyone?

Cheers - C

I have a serious problem with the rotosound highs. Just far too scratchy and tense. I find them abrasive to my tone and to my pick. I still can't believe that they've managed to destroy my fender heavy pick.

However, I love the bottom end of rotosounds. I just don't like the highs. So I use the heavier rotosounds (or heavy pure nickels, if my guitar shop has them in stock), and then mix and match between really slinky ernie balls, fender bullets and (occasionally) a spare nylon G-string.

If you can't find roto yellows, then I suggest you go for the fender bullets. Pure nickels, of course. Nothing beats pure nickel. Except glass, if you're talking slides.

I love THHGTTG. So much so, I've even written a song called hitchiker.

Thank you for the string inputs. It seems though that Rotosounds are not the most popular strings. Anyway I think I know the answer but, will changing string brands while keeping the same gauge require me to take in the little girl for a new set up? Or learn how to do it myself. Trhanks for the advice.

Do the lyrics include "Hoopy Frood who knows where his towel is"? or "Mostly Harmless"

Depends on whom you ask. Marco Jencarelli plays Rotosounds:

Pete Townsend would be another fan of the Rotosound strings. If you are keeping the gauge and the string profile the same no worries. Change from a round to a flatwound and a set-up would be a good idea.
