Hi masterofinsanity: a luthier is someone who builds stringed instruments from raw wood. Is your guy genuinely a luthier or in fact a guitar tech? If the latter, is he highly experienced, skilled and equiped with all the tools of his trade, or is he essentially just a fella doing basic set-up adjustments out of the back room of a store? Could it be that he simply doesn't know how to do the job but doesn't want to admit it? If so, his refusal may be a blessing in disguise, because a neck can be ruined forever by an incorrectly accomplished locking nut conversion.

We are not in a position to answer any of these questions because we don't know the gentleman in question. It is also possible that he is someone who has an "ethical" distaste for Floyds and doesn't want to be involved in what he sees as spoiling a good neck. Who knows?

Anyhow. The direct answer to your post is that the world is full of Fender-type necks with locking nuts on them. They are plenty thick enough - Strats are what Floyd Rose invented his system for, after all. It is a do-able job if you wish it.

But find someone who can do it right. You probably only get one shot at that.

Cheers - C

You may be able to get information on this at www.wammiworld.com -- they sell floyd rose parts and are very helpful with information including instructional videos

If he is in fact, an outright luthier and his statement was in fact, true, he would surely know how to reinforce the neck where not only wouldn't this be an issue, but most likely not worth even bringing up.

As always, this is merely IMO where YMMV.
