9.5 gauge D'Addario's with 5 springs decked, not blocked at this time. I did make a block, but I removed it. It didn't seem to make any difference in tone.

Ernie Ball Reg. Slinky, .010-.046. .009's break too easy for me. Three springs in the whang bar, float it approx. 1/8" off the deck. I have a vintage type whang unit, with the six screws, and I backed off the 4 inner ones about 1/16" and retightened the outer two. Stays in tune fine for me, as I have a light touch and don't tend to yank on it.

I have four strats with tremolos, all mims, and all have three springs. Some have the outer two springs angled in and some have the outer two springs positioned straight across. Why? I don't know. .009 Super Bullets, because that's the way it came from the factory and I like how lite and easy the 9's are to bend. I adjust the truss rod so that neck is perfectly flat, no relief. I remove the tremolo and coat vasoline in the screw slots, then drop the tremolo back into place. I replace the six retaining screws, tighten down until they touch the plate, then loosen all six screws so that they are 1/16 of an inch above the plate, then tighten the two outside screws down until they just touch the plate, then backoff 1/4 turn. I adjust the tremolo springs so that the rear of the tremolo floats 1/8 of an inch above the body of the guitar. I put graphite in the grooves of my nut and lipbalm under the grooves of my string tree.

I have 4 Strats. All of them have 5 springs. I tighten the claw(?) screws down tight to keep my tuning more stable. Never use the tremolo.

I use 3 vertical springs for 09 or 010 and works perfect.
I set up my Stratocaster trem (springs claw) by intervals.

Never tried with 08, 011 or something else.
