It all boils down to the old saying:"One man's meat is another man's poison." or as they say in France "One man's fish is another man's poisson."A bit of humor for our Francophone members hee hee.

I've played tons of awesome Squiers. Their standard line and up are all excellent and the best guitars you will find for their price. The Jagmaster, Venus and 51 are all original Squiers tat are awesome. Though the 51 now has a Fender version.

I have played a lot of Squiers myself because I love going to guitar stores just to mess around and play some cheap to high end guitars but I just think they feel "ugly" in general they dont satisfy me as a consumer ,but just like any guitar its how it feels to the person who is playing it :)

If you want to have some REAL fun with a cheap guitar, try a Ministar. For just over $100, you get this thing that looks more like an axe handle than an axe, has some odd shaped metal parts (like a Yamaha Silent) and a P-90 pickup (on the Rokstar, or two on Lesstar or three on the CastStar). It's made in China in one of the less than perfect factories. You can't adjust intonation but you can adjust string height at both the nut and the bridge. Surprising sound, sustain, and play-ability. Plus the gig bag isn't even 6" wide and loaded barely weighs 4 lbs! Friends have played it and always look surprised and delighted. Sometimes bring it to the office to play at lunch.

It is different. It's also fun...like a headless Steinberger or Traveler guitar. And it's REALLY fun to see people's eyes pop out: "What da heck is that????"

(It's also solid maple.)

knowing that squier used to be a series from fender before it became a sub brand think about this...

would you buy a guitar from the squier series knowing it was cheap if you saw fender written on it's headstock (not saying anything on the quality)?

While I won't bother getting into the rest of thread, I'm going to respond to the initial question. Many, many new guitarists don't know a good guitar from a bad one. Many also don't like the idea of buying a used guitar. So they look at a pretty $100 squire and think that's all they need. Its the gateway guitar into bigger and better things....

Apples and oranges, my friend, apples and oranges.

I recently got a Jazzmaster Classic Player and it's easily my favorite, and not just because it's new, but because it's as close to perfect as I can imagine. I've been in love with the retro look of Jazzmasters and Jags since I was a teen

But we travel a lot and a reasonable travel guitar that can go in the overhead on a plane makes life a lot more pleasant. Sure, it's a compromise. I found a used Steinberger Spirit for a song and that's now what I take. I play it a lot at home too, because I like the way the neck feels and it's less of a compromise, since it's not intentionally designed as a travel guitar.

I may be a lot older than most here, but I've always admired innovation and the ability for something to do the same job in a smaller package. Remember when camcorders held full-size VHS tapes and sat on your shoulder (Like Michael J. Fox in Back to The Future)? Now my cell phone does the same job!

But I definitely prefer the CP.

I think that a lot of the sentiment against the Squier guitars is just uninformed brand snobbery.I'm sure that if some of the people who are quick to dismiss Squiers as inferior junk were to do a blindfold test they'd be hardpressed to figure out which is the $400 MIM Fender and which is the $150 Squier. On a recent trip to my regular music store-Reid Music,Mt. Pearl,NL-I came upon 2 sublime Squier Teles-a '72 Deluxe and a Custom-for about $150 each. Both of these guitars had very very good fit and finish and both sounded like guitars you'd expect to pay several hundred for.Oh how I wish it was easy to do blindfold tests to find out who really has the ears to tell the difference between good and mediocre and is not just being swayed by foregone conclusions and bias.

i dunno man. i think a even blindfolded i could tell between a mim and a $150 squier. the $350 classic vibe series is a different story though.
