Sounds a little like the Mustang Pawnshop. You can turn on the neck, bridge or both coils in both its humbuckers, and choose between the neck, bridge or both pickups being on.

I like the idea of the 5 way switch with a coil-tap tone control. Nice and neat!

Hey Andy,

ok, I have read through everything and had a wee think about it, I think I'm gonna go for it, 5 way super switch and an s1 switch. I think I'll have a go myself with a diagram, and if it doesn't work for me, then maybe I could send it to you and you could have a look?

HI Drew,

I'd be more than happy to sort you out with a diagram (I'll start work on that soon) and have a peek if there's any issues.

One more question (shocking, I know, me with a question  ) where did you buy your s1 switch and stuff? Did you buy it online or in a shop? As I have found the pot and knob separately in different places but they are quite expensive, it's getting to the stage that the wiring on this project cost more that the guitar  however, the experience, learning, banter (sad I know, don't get out much  ) these are all priceless.

You'll want a 500k S-1 Switch to replace your current 500k Vol pot. Two ways to do that. You could order one or you could order a 250k S-1 (which are more commonly found) and swap out the 250k carbon trace for a 500k. If you haven't done that before we can talk you though that. Its dead easy to do. Job done.

I've bought S-1 Switches from the following Sites in the past...

Axesrus - Though frustratingly they no longer sell the S-1 with the knob.

Darren Riley's Guitar & Amp Shop - Here you can buy a 500k S-1 and the S-1 knob separately.

Its also worth checking Ebay as both the Switch and the Knob turn up there fairly regularly.

One thing I should mention here is the questionable reliability of Fenders S-1 switches. Though I've had no issues with the 4 S-1's I have currently in use there are plenty of reports of duff switches, especially on the early models.

Enjoy!

Andy

Hey Andy,

That's awesome, thanks, I will grab one of those s1 switches when I have some cash, I wouldn't mind giving it a go, see how it works. Yeah there is no rush whatsoever for a diagram or anything, as I'm gonna just do little bits and bobs until it's done, as I need to modify the pickguard a wee bit to fit the rail pickup in, plus I wanna do it right, because if it works out well I am toying with the idea of dropping the pickguard into my mex strat.

Also I need a couple of bits, I have the 5 way super switch on the way but I still need to order a push/pull tone knob and the s1 switch goodies. Seriously, I am extremely grateful for all your help, if there is anything I can do in return just give me a shout 8)

Thanks again,

Drew

Hi Drew,

Just to let you know I haven't forgotten about you! I've been distracted with new amp but will get my head into wiring mode soon!

Cheers! :D

No probs Andy, I had a look at your amp thread, if I had one of those beauties I would be distracted too!!

Like I said, there's absolutely no rush, the tired household is pretty hectic at the moment so I haven't had much chance to get round to the tiredcaster. Next week, hopefully!! cos I'm looking forward to hearing this rail pup 8)

Cheers :D

Hi Drew,

I hope your all ready for this mate!

Image

As far as guitar wiring diagrams go that one is pretty Big and Hairy! :D

There's one issue I'm not 100% sure on and that's the placement of the Middle pickup resistor. I recommend getting a competent person (Martian would be my first choice!) to check that out.

Just to clarify, The S-1 is wired as depicted below except NECK (A) and BRIDGE (C) are humbuckers that can both be split at any time using the push/pull tone pot.

Image

All that and you've retained your Passing Lane switch. Bonus!

Remember: When you do come to wire that bad boy up, just focus on wire wire at a time. Trying to take all that lot in one go will make your head hurt!

Keep us posted on how you get on and let us know if you have any queries regarding the above.

Have fun!

Andy

that is indeed some big hairy wiring!! I have a couple of questions, but I shall wait until I see if I can point Martian this way, to have a look :)

I still have to buy the s1 switching and a push/pull tone pot. So when they are bought I will start documenting my progress!

Thanks again Andy, the tiredcaster would be nothing without the help yoiu guys have given me!!

Cheers!

Drew :D

You rang? :D

The 470K ohm resistor is in the right place as far as the middle pickup is concerned.

Hehehe!

Notice how I let Tired_Guitarist contact you. I didn't fancy the incurring the long distance call charges for phoning your Cydonian Mansion on Mars.

BTW, Love what you've done with the place.

Yep, he did get a hold of me.

I'm glad you appreciate the warm, cozy look of the mansion. It is very inviting at this time of year!

As always, you're quite welcome!!

That was the only thing, I think, but I am extremely grateful that you popped in for a look, I also quite like the thought of big hairy/martian wiring goodness in my guitar 8)

I got through to him finally, trying to find the area code for Mars was tricky. Then there was the messing around trying to find an intergalactic telephone card

Got there in the end though! :)

I was looking at the diagram, and I was wondering, how will I know what all the different combinations are? Using the s-1 switch and the super switch? My head hurts just thinking about it :|

As soon as I have a bit of money, I will get the s-1 bits and a push pull pot, then it's all systems go! :)

Many thanks again guys, you've no idea how grateful I am 8)

All the best, Drew

Ironically, people who have a 'zillion' on-board options for their pickups, pots, etc, ultimately tend to only use like three, maybe four at the most as their, "go to" combos. So, in the final analysis, knowing all the intricacies of your wiring is secondary. By this I mean, until you can remember what specifically turns on and off what and to what degree, set your priority to focus on the tones your switchings and dialings produce. This is most important, especially in an actual playing situation.

Again, you're quite welcome. Enjoy!

Hey Martian,

I have to admit that I didn't think of that, and thinking about it that sounds like it will be fun to discover different tones and stuff. I start the project properly on tuesday, so once it's done I will just sit and mess around with different combinations etc., and if I find any I especially like, I could always put it up here for some advice, as when it comes to stuff like in or out of phase etc. I haven't much of a clue, and I like to know how things work, for instance what pickups in different combinations do :)

Stay tuned for some wiring fun 8)

Drew
