Hello all, hope everyone is good!

Right, I am hoping for some more assistance with my strat project, as some of you might know, I have been working on a HSS strat project, known as the tiredcaster. I replaced the stock bridge single coil with a wilkinson 'bucker salvaged from another guitar, this along with a passing lane/blower switch.

Anyway, I have finally managed to get the parts I wanted to continue with the project, and I need some help with my plans, big hairy help

I have a single coil sized humbucker for the neck, and a hotter humbucker pickup for the bridge, both with 4 conductors, and I would like to wire it up so that I can have switching something like this..

pos.1 on the 5 way switch (nearest the bridge) full bridge humbucker

pos.2 one coil of the bridge bucker and the single coil middle p'up

pos.3 (middle) middle single coil

pos.4 one coil from the neck humbucker and the middle single coil

pos.5 (nearest the neck) full neck humbucker

also, maybe some way to split the neck bucker and bridge bucker in positions 1 and 5, so i will basically have the choice of HSH or SSS configuration. This would be perfect, I mean I am going to give it a go myself when the parts arrive, but it would be great to have you guys involved :)

I really hope this all makes sense, as describing this sort of thing is by no means a strong point for me

Thanks for checking this out, it means a great deal :)

Drew

Hi tired guitarist: I believe the Big Hairy Eyes are rather busy elsewhere these days and don't often find time to look in. But if we rub on this Aladdin style lamp I'm holding in my hand perhaps we can summon the genie...

Lets see.

Cheers - C

Howdy!

There I was at work, minding my own business when I was accosted by several men dressed in black suits and shades before being swiftly bundled into the back of an unmarked van.

I awoke several hours later outside my house, Sock-less with a post-it note stuck to my forehead instructing me to check in on this thread. I can only think of one man who could orchestrate such a heist, The Blue Badger...

:D :D :D

Well that sounds very cool and is all very do-able!

If you could let me know what pickups (brand) your dropping and whether or not you have a 5 Way Super Switch, I'll amend your original wiring diagram to suit.

As far as splitting the coils in Pos 1 & 5, That could be done by replacing your master tone control pot with a Push/Pull pot.

Work has me pinned at the moment but I'll happily get stuck in to this on the weekend. In the mean time I shall be keeping an eye on this thread.

Cheers!

Andy

I am sorry Mr. Big Hair for employing such extreme measures, it was either that or try to assemble some sort of droid/image projecting robot, a la star wars (help us AndyBighair, you're our only hope!) but I figured I would post a message instead :D

First of all thank you very much indeed Ceri, the genie lamp worked, and I am very grateful!

Righty-o

The single coil sized 'bucker for the neck is an IronGear Jail House Rail, from my fave parts site Axetec.
http://www.irongear.co.uk/irongear_019.htm

the bridge bucker is an IronGear Steam Hammer, from the same place

http://www.irongear.co.uk/irongear_024.htm

As for a 5-way super switch, no I don't have one, but if I would be best to use one then I can try get hold of one. I will also get a push/pull pot.

There's absolutely no rush Andy, if there's anything I can do in return please let me know! I appreciate you even reading this so I am extremely grateful for all your help :)

Many thanks again,

Drew

HA! Quality :D

Hi Drew,

I was just thinking....

You might not need the Super Switch, as you'll get to split the coils in pos 1,2,4,5 with the a single push/pull pot.

Of course if you want Split coils on the 5 way selection with out having to pull up on the tone knob, a Super Switch is the way to go, but you'd miss out on having the option of a full humbucker with the middle pup in pos 2 & 4.

Does that make sense?

Andy

Hey Andy,

yes that makes sense, but I had a look at the super switches and I'm kinda intrigued, so I'm gonna get one of those, and eke out as many pickup combinations as I can! Would this work or is there a specific kind of super switch you would recommend? (second from top)

http://www.axetec.co.uk/axetec%20guitar%20parts%20spares%20pickups_054.htm

Thanks again so much for your help, I'm eternally grateful, if we ever meet at some sort of Fender lounge meet/event then I owe you a beer 8)

Cheers,

Drew

Hi Drew,

Yep that switch will do just fine. If its multipul pickup combos your after you might want to take a peek at fenders S-1 Switching...

http://support.fender.com/service_diagr ... A_SISD.pdf

That lot with coil split Humbuckers will give you plenty of combos to play with!

Let me know what you think. :D

Ladies and gentlemen, as it happens one of those two pictures (above) in fact shows EXACTLY what Andy looks like. Makes it quite interesting having a beer with him in a bar, I can tell you. Though I won't reveal which of the pictures is the one, and therefore what kind of experience that drink was...

Hey Andy,

I had a look at the diagram, but I'm not sure I understand what happens, is the s1 switch a variation on the 5 way super switch or would I have both? Although I'm getting a bit nervous about whether I would be able to do all that wiring, I am quite excited about this project, cos I've always wanted a guitar I could use for more or less any style of music, and this would fit the bill very well. Plus it's always fun to play mad scientist with all the soldering

As Andy is helping me out, I better not guess, just in case

As always, thanks so much guys :)

Hi Drew,

To get the most of of an S-1 Switch its best used with a Super switch.

The S-1 Switch is a 4 pole, single throw switch. Fender use it to give 5 additional "series" combinations along side the standard parallel combos usually found on a Strat.

Yeah, it does look a bit scary at first but if you brake it down wire by wire and have a clear diagram to work from (which I can provide if needed) its not all that bad.

Its probably worth going and trying out an Am Dlx Strat with the S-1 switching (the pre 2010 models have the best combos IMO) and see if you like it.

If you do want the S-1 Switching but don't fancy wiring it yourself, I'm more than happy to order the bits in, wire it up, and send it out to you. You'll just need to add it to your current rig. :D

Plenty to think about there. Let me know what you fancy and we'll go from there.

Cheers!

Andy

Hey Andy,

ok, I have read through everything and had a wee think about it, I think I'm gonna go for it, 5 way super switch and an s1 switch. I think I'll have a go myself with a diagram, and if it doesn't work for me, then maybe I could send it to you and you could have a look?

One more question (shocking, I know, me with a question  ) where did you buy your s1 switch and stuff? Did you buy it online or in a shop? As I have found the pot and knob separately in different places but they are quite expensive, it's getting to the stage that the wiring on this project cost more that the guitar  however, the experience, learning, banter (sad I know, don't get out much  ) these are all priceless.

Thanks again guys, and Andy there's no rush or anything, I'm just glad of the help.

All the best,

Drew :)
