Hi guys,

I'm in need of a little clarification if anyone can help.

I have a USA strat- owned for months now, but, unfortunately I had to watch the thing being kicked off my bed by a drunken acquaintance.

Now, as expected, I was mortified and gave it a very close inspection.

After shaking it a bit to check for any internal problems I've noticed a rattle.

Discovered that this is the micro tilt screw (at the bottom of the neck plate on the reverse of the guitar is a little hole with a screw inside used to adjust the neck pitch). If I turn the guitar over and over I notice that the head of this screw is free to drop and rattle around within the hole, though it won't fall out.

I can't say I 've noticed this before, although I many not have been looking hard enough. My only worry is that the guitar may have landed on the neck hard enough to somehow break the micro tilt screw?

Anyone else have this problem/ shed some light on this?

Any help is much appreciated.

Have you tried to screw it back in (until just snug) to stop the rattling?

Hi Orvilleowner- thanks for your reply.

I' ve just been reluctant to do that as I've heard that pressure on the neck can strip the neck bolts, although I agree that just very slightly tightening the screw won't really affect anything.

The main worry is that the neck was allready factory set and the impact has dislodged it in some way. However- if the neck were pitched and the screw came loose I would expect a certain amount of play in the neck (please correct me if I'm wrong)- which there isn't.

Is it common for Fender to release their Strats with necks un-adjusted, or should I worry?

Replies are much appreciated.

I agree. Double check by tightening the screws before you try to snug up that adjuster bolt.

I haven't seen enough to know how common it is. You should worry if you can't get that screw to "bite" on any threads.

Yeah I will definately do that. I've really just left the guitar alone since it happened due to worry, but I'll check the torque on the neck bolts.

I guess the conclusion is that the shock must have just loosened the screw and it was only snug against the neck.

However, if anyone knows of factory neck micro-tilt adjustments, that would be a great help.

Thanks again for the reply orville.

Typically, the standoff would be the equivalent of the thickness of two business cards with the neck screws nice and snug. Note that over time, the neck screws would have to be tightened as a matter of due course any way as wood shrinks and even in it's case, any guitar would absorbs some jolts and possibly need a neck tightening tweak. It's nothing to panic over and nothing out of the ordinary in terms of servicing/maintenance.
