Hi,
I was wondering if someone would tell me the difference between an Alder Strat and an Ash Strat. Is there a very big difference in the tone/weight/finish? I personally prefer deeper more trebly/bassy sounds. I have no experience with either one of those woods. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

Ash is said to have better sustain and more bite. Alder will produce a warmer more balanced tone.

depends on what ash you are referring to. is it northern ash, or swamp ash?

alder is the most used wood for guitars. it has a nice rounded out sound, warm, and is not incredibly heavy.

northern ash is very heavy. its the wood they use in some baseball bats. so its strong, but again very heavy. it has great sustain.

swamp ash is the opposite of northern ash. it is extremely light. very open sounding. this is my favorite tone wood. i just made a semi-hollow guitar out of swamp ash. the light wood, combined with hollow chambers makes it weigh almost nothing.
