The guitar arrived this morning. It's condition is immaculate, to say the least. The case lacks a handle, the spring is shot in one latch. Really quite care worn. Faint initials RH on the face of the lid right above where the handle was. The seller had observed that they were essentially '57RI's of that period with the Clapton circuits. The neck on this guitar lacks the v-taper of the production models. [I've owned two, still have one presently] I'll need some time to compare it to my Gilmour and my '57VHR. More later.

That's great news Doc I was anxious to hear you were pleased with it :)

Restore the case - easy peasy

Clean the tolex (maybe the hardest part)

Replace handle & latch:

http://ggqualitycase.com/shop/parts/bon ... er-handle/

Congrats on the new Strat! 8)

The integrity of the top of the case is really wanting. The top panel has separated from the frame that the sides make and is moving. I sent the people at G&G a picture of the case. They seemed more inclined to suggest that it be replaced. It would cost me at least $60 in shipping and parts to have them repair it. No labor cost. There's really no 'vintage vibe' it as fas as I can tell. I tend to feel that the excellent conidition of the guitar really begs a classier looking case. Any thoughts.

Consider a new vintage Fender tweed or even a custom shop dx case. You want something that reflects the type of guitar inside.

ZZDoc...If it were me, I would repair the original case, even if the cost is as much as a new one. As they say it is only original once.

At the very least I would find one of the exact same type. I might have missed it in the post somewhere but the original cases during that time had the orange fuzzy lining, is your case of this same type?

T2

T2 and Xhefri are well writ. It is lined with the orange fuzzies and too shabby in comparison to the guitar. In the language of modern converse it's condition is like well so disgusto that it totally grr-roses me out....The last time I saw something THAT bad it was the case my old '58 came to me in. Four years of hard use beat the crap out of it, and this one is near on 36. I'm going look around for a replacement.

Makes me wonder if the case you have is really the original. The guitar is near mint and the case is beat to .... Ummm something doesn't seem right there...

I thought the same thing - obviously the seller used "a" case.

Too bad it's un-restorable though - you never know who owned it.

Seller claims he discovered the guitar in a pawn shop in Colorado and that the case is 'beat up but original'. Has excellent feedback ratings and an impressive inventory of gear, as Mike pointed out to me privately. [In '97 I purchased an American Standard from a Showcase Dealer in NYS. For some reason he did not have the case intended for that guitar so he put in a new Strat Plus case. That's the case my Pewter Clapton lives in now.]

I might know where you could get a late '50s tweed case.

\Thanks. This guitar was built in '87 so I expect that a used case with vintage vibe, in excellent condition, or even new would serve. There seems to be quite an assortment of cases on eBay. Sellers are asking thousands for 50 yo OE cases. I don't romanticize that stuff.

I can't speak to what Stevens and Black did for Eric's stage guitars, but was my intent to indicate that a laminated 22-fret neck as well as the jack were later incorporated into the production guitar.

The regular production ECs and their Custom Shop counterparts sported (and sport) a single piece maple neck AFAIK.

To be honest - I never saw the Clapton signature strats with a separate laminated maple cap fretboard.

The stereo jack came as batteries drained so fast with a conventional mono cable, prompting the R&D team to add a stereo input jack in order to maximize battery life and reduce drain.

Eric's Pewter prototype, without the toggle and with the 21-fret neck, graces the cover of Duchossoir's book.

There were two Pewter prototypes which later became the templates for the final design.

Perhaps the guitar you're talking about is the main stage axe which had the Stevens flamed maple neck fitted. The second Pewter prototype eventually got an overhaul during the first half of September 1988 when Michael put a 22-fret birdseye maple neck on it.

These "smoker" guitars were Clapton's favorite stage and studio axes from 1988 to 1994.

The 22 fret neck on my Pewter guitar does not appear to have been cut from a single piece of wood. The fret board definitely appears to have been applied. Theres a faint seam visible. Not so with the 21 fret neck on the new Torino Red which, BTW, has less of a discernable taper and spine on the back than the Pewter. It's much closer in feel to my Gilmour and '57VHR. One can only assume that entire question of the final neck design was rethought and revised between the time this guitar's neck was built in 1987 and the start of mass production. According to Duchossoir, Eric signed the contract with Fender on May 7, 1987, the the prototypes were shown at the '88 Winter NAMM, but production taking into consideration the changes in circuitry and neck design did not begin until Spring 1988 which would coincide with the dates you provided.

Our venerable forumite Lefty Elliot told me a couple of years ago that Mike Stevens did the neck swap on the first Pewter prototype in February of 1988.

Eric was seen playing this particular guitar during the Nelson Mandela's 70th birthday charity bash at Wembley and the Prince's Trust rock gala at the RAH.

These events took place in late May/early June of that year.

It's very possible a very small batch of EC Strats were sold with maple capped fretboards.
Afterwards Fender went to the single piece construction.

I'm looking into the fret board question, presently. One additional fact I failed to note. The neck radius on my prototype guitar is 7.5. It was upped to 9.5.
