Ahhh nice catch on the call to Consumer Relations! Having been part of making the 1st American Standards, I distinctly remember (well...as distinctly as i can these days) Torino Red. So I went to our database and lo and behold.....not there....nor Gun Metal Blue.....nor Arctic White....So.......vague answer for vague info we had available to them......time to update!! Our thanks for the assist!!

So anyway, I looked through my old price lists and found Torino Red in the March 1,1987 price list. There ya have it. Hopefully the next answer won't be vague!

All the best,
rob

The funny thing is, we know that these colors were available in 1988-1991. Torino Red (Fender color number #558) was used on the Strat Plus'. BUT many of the color charts did not list a host of colors that fender used on many guitars of this era, namely 87-91.

If it's any help, there was a red American Standard on the cover of the August 1987 Guitar Player; they gave the guitar away in the issue (along with a Champ 12 amp - that red-knob all tube version from that era). I have the issue; in it the guitar is referred to as "Ferrari Red". Since "Hot Rod Red" and "Torino Red" are different is it possible that they renamed "Ferrari Red" "Torino Red"?

For comparison I snagged this photo off the web instead of shooting a pick with my camera:

Hey guys: I know beyond doubt that the American Series Strat came in Chrome Red in the early-to-mid 2000s, because I had one in my hot little hands all ready to buy - when I saw a Sienna Sunburst, fell in love and dragged that out the shop instead.

This is confirmed by the 2006 Frontline catalog, which lists the Am Series in Chrome Red. The same catalog also offers the Am Deluxe in Candy Apple Red.

Can't speak for certain about earlier years as regards those models.

By the way, regarding the previous discussion on this thread; I don't know anything about Ferrari Red morphing into Torino Red, but I'd certainly always thought of Hot Rod and Torino Red as two different colours. Torino is darker than Hot Rod, right? And since I've got that 2006 Frontline in my hand I've turned to the colour chart and sure enough it shows them as different finishes: Hot Rod is #15 and Torino is #58. So at least in 2006 Fender definitely thought of those as different colours: Torino had not morphed into Hot Rod, or vice versa.

Again, can't speak for earlier eras.

Cheers - C

Edit: oops, missed the last couple of posts while typing, which are saying the same thing on the Hot Rod/ Torino thing. We agree. :D

Reverb is pretty cool vs fleabay - and Torino Red looks to be the Clapton Model here:

The Torino Red finish came after Clapton requested a guitar finished in the same colour as his Ferraris.
This was in 1985/86, I guess.

Clapton toured with the Torino Red prototype for nearly 2 years before selling it to cricketer Ian Botham as an exchange for his bat.

Now that I think about it - when I posted earlier about Ford complaining to Fender about the use of "Torino" maybe it was Ferrari complaining about the use of their name so Fender changed it to Torino (for the city in Italy, not the Ford model).

Here is a very early 87 Custom Shop Clapton Strat in Torino Red. They did not release very many of these, as this one has 21 frets and the MRB on/off mini-switch. Very red red! This has to be among the very first of the EC Signature Strats. The pickups have the old lables on them. This would have been made right before the release of the Strat Plus series, which also came in this color.

It's important to note that the active/passive toggle was shortlived as "Old God" preferred playing active and unplug the cable from the guitar to turn off the preamp.

This feature was adopted on the 35th Anniversary model of 1990 and the Richie Sambora signature series, first introduced in 1991.

In the case of the latter, the midboost bypass switch came in the form of a push-push button.

We've mentioned this phase of the development of guitar several times during our discussions of the Clapton Series. Thought you'd like to know that it will be in my hands in about 6 days. It is not the prototype, but one of those produced by the Custom Shop, before the mods you mentioned, as well as the 22 fret laminated board were turned over to the attention of the factory production line. I was not about to let this rare bird be snared by another Clapton aficionado. A fitting mate to my early bird pewter, I'm sure.

The guitar arrived this morning. It's condition is immaculate, to say the least. The case lacks a handle, the spring is shot in one latch. Really quite care worn. Faint initials RH on the face of the lid right above where the handle was. The seller had observed that they were essentially '57RI's of that period with the Clapton circuits. The neck on this guitar lacks the v-taper of the production models. [I've owned two, still have one presently] I'll need some time to compare it to my Gilmour and my '57VHR. More later.

None of the aformentioned models came with a separate laminated fretboard.

Those Stevens 22-fretters were made up from a single chunk of maple.

Ditto for the JW Black neck from the so-called "Cream Reunion/Back Home" Blackie.

I can't speak to what Stevens and Black did for Eric's stage guitars, but was my intent to indicate that a laminated 22 fret neck as well as the jack were later incorporated into the production guitar. Eric did tour with the Pewter prototype guitar containing the upgraded electronics[no mini-toggle] and still the one piece 21 fret neck, which is what is installed in the guitar I purchased. Eric's Pewter protogype, without the toggle, and with the 21 fret neck, graces the cover of Duchossoir's book.

Restore the case - easy peasy

Clean the tolex (maybe the hardest part)

Replace handle & latch:

Congrats on the new Strat! 8)
