I have played a torino red strat plus once many years ago.. it was a flat (non-met) dark red..

The red that someone posted above in 2000 american series was chrome red.. :)

Interesting that Torino morped into Hot Rod Red, I never knew that! :D

I'm looking for anything Stratocaster. I own 3 books "the Fender Stratocaster" book by Duchossoir (1994) and "The Story Of The Fender Stratocaster" (1995) and the "Fender Stratocaster Handbook", which IS from 2007 but has little info on finishes and years of the newer models. Is there any updated book you can recommend?

If you could, I am looking for info if Torino red was available in 2000 as the new American Standard Strat and for how long. I believe it was until 2003.

And anything you have regarding info on specific finishes available on what Stratocaster model in what year; I am looking for that as well. Going all the way back to '54.

Thanks![/quote]

I doubled checked, the 1999-2006 Fender Frontlines listed what each models color options where and NO Torino Red was offered during 2000, or any year that I can find for an American Standard Strat...seems the color was used on the EC model and on Duo Sonics, and some squires, but not much else. Some one else list the Guitar Player Stratmania issue and yes that sure looks like Torino/Ferrari Red, but that color is not listed in the any documentation I can find...might be better to just flat out ask Fender and see what they say...FWIW

Thanks! I contacted Fender and unfortunately I only got a really vague and generic answer saying that there simply has never been a Torino Red American Standard. I believe now that this color started out as Ferrari Red, morphed into Torino because of the name and then ended up as "Torino Red" on the Clapton and "Hot Rod Red" on the Knopfler Model. But in '87 and '88 there were Ferrari Red ..or whatever you wanna call it..American Standards...as I just bought one and it does not look refinished:)

Love that color!

According to the below (expired) auction here is a '87 Torino Red strat:

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Music-instrume ... 193017.htm

I love this colour- looks a little dark which sets it apart from Fiesta :) Would have been nice to snap this one up :)

Ahhh nice catch on the call to Consumer Relations! Having been part of making the 1st American Standards, I distinctly remember (well...as distinctly as i can these days) Torino Red. So I went to our database and lo and behold.....not there....nor Gun Metal Blue.....nor Arctic White....So.......vague answer for vague info we had available to them......time to update!! Our thanks for the assist!!

So anyway, I looked through my old price lists and found Torino Red in the March 1,1987 price list. There ya have it. Hopefully the next answer won't be vague!

All the best,
rob

New member here with a 2012 Torino Red American Standard. Just to put the record straight.
It is the FSR lipstick pup one which is still listed at Fender
http://www.fender.com/series/special-ed ... orino-red/
Stratosphere on the 'bay have parted out a few of these and don't mention they are FSR.

Historically as mentioned, Torino Red was a name change from Ferrari Red which Ferrari objected to. Similar happened with the 7-Up Green which became Candy Green.

Chrome Red was an option for the American Deluxe series, as far as I can tell. Never saw that colour on the American series.

@chromeface - I think you might have that reversed. I've never seen a chrome red American Deluxe, but plenty of chrome red American Series. A lot of the ones I've seen have been the HSS and HH models that had the Fender humbuckers and S-1 switching (the mid-2003 to end of American Series versions).

I did have a 2004 American Deluxe V-neck Strat for a while, and it was candy apple red instead of chrome red.

Chrome Red was offered as a colour option for the American Deluxes in late 2001 to replace Crimson Transparent. Fender dropped this colour in late 2003/early 2004.

Here are two pictures of an American Deluxe HSS in Chrome Red, hope these reference photos help! :)

Which one?

As I recall, the Muddy Waters Telecaster was finished in Torino Red. May be worth checking that out if you're not fussy about the actual body shape/difference in neck/different sounds...

... maybe not my best idea.

But if you're looking for a photo example, that'd be a good one to look at.

The production Muddy Waters model was Candy Apple Red.

Correct, the Muddy Waters Telecaster was Candy Apple Red. I don't think I've ever seen Torino Red on any guitar in the flesh, is it a metallic red finish?

- EDIT -

Ok, I hadn't read the full thread, I see that Torino Red isn't metallic.

I only remembered candy tangerine on the American Deluxes. While the first one looks like candy tangerine to me the second one does kind of look like chrome red.
