Has there EVER been a Torino Red American Standard Strat?

I thought there was. Now though, based on new information, I am not so sure.

Anyone?

Which one?

As I recall, the Muddy Waters Telecaster was finished in Torino Red. May be worth checking that out if you're not fussy about the actual body shape/difference in neck/different sounds...

... maybe not my best idea.

But if you're looking for a photo example, that'd be a good one to look at.

When they first came out with the American Standard I distinctly remember a Torino Red American Standard in that color, I even remember the poster in the music store with a Torino Red American Standard with a Maple Neck leaning on a rocking chair with a Silverface Princeton in the background with the cord connecting them and it was the standard cord that came with them in the case candy, but I went through all my color charts and Fender literature and can't find where they list that color as an option.

I am getting old, but somethings I still remember very clearly and I KNOW my memory isn't that bad.

Maybe someone else will wander in here and give us a more difinitive answer on this.

I would have sworn the same thing - that Torino Red was an original color for the American Standard. However, to check myself I just pulled out the August 1987 issue of Guitar Player from my files - the cover story is "Strat Mania" and the shot is of a red American Standard (back then they did a giveaway in each issue; they gave away the guitar from the cover plus a red-knob Champ 12 amp). According to the giveaway that deep red was called "Ferrari Red" at that time.

I suspect that at some point Ferrari objected that Fender hadn't licensed the name, so Fender changed it to "Torino Red" after a certain red Torino on the old 70s TV show "Starsky & Hutch". I suspect that Ford then objected to the color became known as "Hot Rod Red". I also suspect that is why "7-Up Green" on the EC became "candy green".

You'd think the ungrateful bastards wouldn't mind a bit of free advertising.

EDIT: Found this on eBay. Seller reckons it's Torino Red.

Thanks for your input guys!

Yes it very much IS Ferrari red, just like the car. And I can see the name change to Torino (makes sense) and Hot Rod Red is the same as Torino.

I wrote fender customer relations and to my disappointment the person replying gave me very vague answers. Saying there never even was a Torino Red American Standard (and Ferrari Red he didn't mention).

I am pretty sure there was (even though I am not old enough to remember).

PLEASE if anyone has access to Fender Strat (especially finishes and years or even catalogues) information or a Fender book suggestion (updated, my Stratocaster book by Duchossoir is from 1994) please let me know.

I have a Fender mousepad with a Ferrari Red American Standard on it. And this guitar looks like a 2000 era Standard. I want to know when they made those I believe from 2000-2003 but am not sure.

As you guys can tell I love that color, so I am always looking to buy one in that color.

And I am happy to say I just picked up a Torino...whatever Ferrari! Red '87 Strat on Ebay:)

This is a nice place to be on the web by the way, my kinda people!

This definitely is not Torino Red. As always with fender reds, most people do have no idea what they are really called. And the reds often look different on pictures (Dakota sometimes looks like Torino and Fiesta does too).

I love the way colour appeals to us, and who doesn't love a red Stratocaster? At any shade of red it's a classic.

I still have a dream of a Strat finished in (Gibson) Pelham Blue..

Knopfler Strat is Hot Rod Red (same as Torino)

Clapton Strat comes in Torino Red

I have quite a few pricelists from around 1986 to 1993 or so, Fender Frontlines back to when they started up to about 2007, several books on Strats, Teles, Fenders in general as well as a couple on Fender Amps, Marshall amps, and one with a ton of Fender Schematics for amps. I also have a ton of Guitar Players from 1985 to a couple of years ago, and some Vintage Guitar mags from the early days when they were news print type and the last few years or so. I also have some Fender catalogues/pricelists from Germany while stationed there, but my German is getting pretty rusty, so pics is all I can decifer anymore.
I also have a few books on Gibsons and guitars in general.

The list is pretty long to list everything, but hopefully that gives you an idea. If there is something specific your looking for let me know. Those are my sources as my memory is not as good as it used to be and I am not even in the same league as Retroverbial!

I also worked in a music store for several years while stationed in the panhandle of Florida during 1985 to 1990 or so.

AWESOME!
I'm looking for anything Stratocaster. I own 3 books "the Fender Stratocaster" book by Duchossoir (1994) and "The Story Of The Fender Stratocaster" (1995) and the "Fender Stratocaster Handbook", which IS from 2007 but has little info on finishes and years of the newer models. Is there any updated book you can recommend?

If you could, I am looking for info if Torino red was available in 2000 as the new American Standard Strat and for how long. I believe it was until 2003.

And anything you have regarding info on specific finishes available on what Stratocaster model in what year; I am looking for that as well. Going all the way back to '54.

Thanks!

The Stratocaster Chronicles. Don't know if it has anything on the red you're looking for, but it's the best Strat book I've ever seen.

The production Muddy Waters model was Candy Apple Red.
