I just bought a Strat I believe the year is a 2002 because the serial # is Z212*****.Anyhow the body of this guitar is a dark brown almost like chocolate, with a white pickguard and a maple neck(blonde).Do any of you musicians out there know anything about this color or have you seen any at all. I am not too knowledgeable about guitars so I thought I would find information from people that know what they are talking about. Thanks a lot.

I think that you have an early Highway One Strat. One of the colors they came in was kind of a chocolate brown. It's the only Strat I know of durring that time frame that came in that color. The color didn't stick around very long.

Normally the HWY1's have a satin paint job (no shine), but some people buff them up to high gloss with some rubbing compound, cotton cloth and elbow grease.

If the paint is flat or satin than it's deffinately a HWY1, but if it's glossy it might be one.

There are no Highway One Strats shown in the 2002 Frontline nor is there any brown finish listed within the color chart on page 93 of that catalog. More sleuthing will be needed to identify your model.

Thanks for the correction. My bad I was making an educated guesses based on seeing HWY1s with a "Z2" S/N in the past. I looked into the HWY1 production date and according to Tom Wheeler's book, "The Stratocaster Chronicles, p. 253”, the HWY1 was introduced in 2003.

Now knowing that Fender uses old stock before new (and at random) than the Strat in question could easily be a HWY1. The fact that the body is "Dark Brown" leads me to believe this. It’s the only Strat I know of that came in Dark Brown. If we had some photos that would help clear up the mystery.

Retroverbial, if you could look up in the '02 or '03 Fender Frontline what guitar did come in that color. I feel like it would narrow the search. Dark Brown is a rare color.

Well thank you for the great information. This guitar is definately an early highway one.The finish is a satin finish ( not glossy at all). When I first saw the guitar I was surprised because I have never seen a strat in that color. I bought the guitar from an elderly lady and her late husband purchased it for her but she didn't like it because she said it was too heavy, she like to strum on her Mexican made Martin.I bought the guitar with a small amp and fender gig bag from her for $700.00.As for the guitar I have found that the color is called "Cocoa Transparent" (339).I'm 62 and always wanted a nice American Strat even though I'm not a good guitar player I certainly appreciate the beauty of the instrument and the music. I just want too say a Big Thank You to you gentlemen for sharing your knowledge with me Thanks Again.

P.S. On the headstock which is small it also has 2 string trees, and the spaghetti logo,6 screws on the bridge. I will try to post a picture when my daughter comes to visit, I'm not too good on the computer.

There are in the British Fender pricelist though!

I've had a copy of the 2002 pricelist for years and the Highway 1s are in there- the first ones.

The colour is Cocoa Transparent.

Here's the original details!

They're lovely for the money... essentially Mexican bits made in the American factory.

Although the HSS one I used to own smelled funny. As in, rank. As in, horsey rank. And that lovely finish going shiny would just piss me off!

I'm sorry, but every HWY1 I've ever seen to include all the early ones I've ever seen have always been satin finish. Now I was in Iraq from Feb '02- Feb '03 so I might have missed the gloss Hwy1s.
