I did a search but didn't know what to call the stripe on the back of the strat neck, so hopefully I'm not wasting anyones time with a repeat question.
The dark colored stripe "sank" in enough that there is a sharp edge on both sides of it on my MIM strat. I am fairly new to guitar, and have only had the Strat about a year, so I don't know if this is common or not. The guy who did my setup is highly sought after, so I'm assuming he knows what he's talking about when he says its not a big deal. He is talking about shaving down the lighter colored wood on the neck to match the stripe, which makes me a little nervous about future movement. What REALLY concerns me is how quickly it happened though. It was fine one morning, and literally a few hours later it was sunken. Is this normal expansion/contraction movement?
Sorry for such a long post, but thanks for any advice!

I have always called it skunk stripe.

Under that dark strip of wood is the truss rod. Fender makes the maple neck then routes out the back to install the truss rod. Then a darker piece is glued into place to cover it. The slippage is probably nothing to worry about and smoothing it out shouldn't hurt anything.

Is the whole stripe sinking in, or just in one spot. I've never heard of this happening before. It sounds like the glue might have let loose causing the sinking.

Before you let that guy eat up your neck, you should think about other options. If I'm not mistaken, since that stripe is glued in to begin with and is obviously turning loose, you can probably get somebody to take it out and put it back in again. This work might be alittle expensive, but I guess it depends on how well you love your guitar.

It starts on the seventh fret, where it is very minor, then gets deeper up toward the nut. At the end of the stripe, behind the second fret where its deepest, its only sunken about the thickness of a business card, but you can definitely feel it! I emailed Fender about it, we'll see what they tell me.

I had the neck replaced under warranty, but now I've got some sharp fret edges. Is this something a novice can take care of? The shop that installed the new neck showed me how they use a small file, and maybe steel wool, but I"m not sure how hard to file, or from which angle??

This is kind of going out on a limb but it might be possible: Different woods expand and contract at different temps over certain amounts of time etc. I think that the skunk stripe is traditionally walnut. This might be that cause but I don't think it would be as extreme unless you live in a wild climate area. It could just be the glue like someone mentioned earlier.
